You need to partially disassemble a T40 to physically determine if a mini-PCI card is fitted. The slot is not accessible from outside a T4x laptop.

Not all T40 models came with a wireless card fitted.

You really need to restate exactly what your problem is... it not particularly clear from the thread you linked!

Cheers,

Bill

Boot into the BIOS and look there.

It will say 237375Uxxxxxxx
2373 is the group model and the 75U (or whatever your's is) is the specific model.

the laptop part number IS the system board serial number

if there is no sticker on the back, then that is what IBM would go by for determining warranty status

The serial number usually CONTAINS the part number

ERGO - 273775URHDAIRJS

273775U is part number
the RHDAIRJS is the serial number

The key is "usually".

I told the OP this in the other thread that he had going, so he posted the info from his BIOS. The part number isn't included in his. I even tried guessing his model number and helping by checking out the Lenovo site.

The only time I have ever hear of the part number or serial not being in there is when the laptop is a refurb.

I too bought a T40 from Ebay UK without any part number or serial number.

I just compared the spec with the models on IBM site and guessed at the closest match I could find. I then used that part number as the reference for downloading the drivers and everything seems to be working perfectly well.

Just have a guess and have a go!

I guessed at 2373 and didnt worry too much about the last 3 digits.

Also, if your WiFi card is missing and you are worried about what will work - dont. I installed the latest BIOS and was able to use a Gigabyte GNWIAG02 and it works fine.

AFAIK, the following is the case. You have to have the serial number in the BIOS for Software Installer to work. It uses this information to determine which model thinkpad you have so that it presents the appropriate drivers and software.

You can put the serial numbers back in the BIOS by booting up with an IBM Maintenance Diskette. IBM does not sell these. You have to be a business partner or some such to get one. There are older versions available for download from the web.

EDIT: If you don't want to do the above, you can download and install manually from the following link. Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p

Not true

Hi,
You can manually enter a model number - e.g. I entered 2373 22G and let it run.

It installed all the drivers and utilities etc and I have been using the laptop for over 2 weeks and all seems to be OK. The only minor problem I am having is with a USB DVD Writer - it writes stuff fine but seems to have problems playing back a DVD movie. I havent tried the device on another PC so I dont know if it is down to the laptop or the device.

Try several DVD movies. I think that some of the dual-layer movies do not work on all DVD players. I bought a movie brand new in the airport, and it played halfway through and that was it. I couldn't even access the DVD menu to try and start from the chapter I had the problem in. The movie played fine on my home DVD player. Other DVD's played fine in my ThinkPad - but a few didn't.

For a DVD player built-in or plugged in through a drive bay, I know that you want DMA mode enabled. You can check for this in Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > Secondary IDE Channel > Advanced Settings > Current Transfer Mode:. For an external USB DVD drive, I am not so sure, but I believe it is necessary to use a USB 2.0 port to have acceptable data transfer rates for video.
