T42 infrared working/not working
Happy owner of a T42 (3UU). Problem: IR works with my iPAQ 3150 (OK, that's not a problem
) but not with my Dell Inspiron 8000 (which also works with the iPAQ). So, both laptops work with the iPAQ, but not with each other . . . Any hints?!

IBM won't work with Dell. It's like asking Bush to go fishing with Kerry.

Tumed, I can't honestly remember what I did, or if I ever got it working . . . I finally went with a cross-over cable, direct ethernet connection between the computers (although this was fraught with difficulties itself
) You've got the IR turned on? (Pretty sure there's a BIOS setting for this; Access IBM [the big blue button!]/Configure/Manage connections/Infrared/Enable) Other than that, give the devices a clear path b/t the IR windows and say a prayer
Good luck!
Sometime back I tried using the IR between 2 thinkpads both T42's and it didnot work, everything was turned on in the bios and also shows up in the computer properties.
At that I thought i was missing some drivers or a configuration error and was in a hurry didnot have much time to worry about and used a ethernet cable between them.
A regular ethernet cable ( no need for a cross over) works because of the auto sensing on the intel gigabit chip.
As far as IBM intentionally disabling it for DELL's machines , I doubt it because a T42 didnot work with a similar machine, both factory install's and exact same hardware.
