Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums :)

You can add a fingerprint reader to your T40; it will, however, have to be a USB device as I do not think there is a way to add it to the palmrest and the T40 motherboard doesn't have a connector for it. You could always put in a new motherboard, either a T42 or a T43, and then replace the palmrest, etc....but that is a bit too much work to add a fingerprint reader. ;) :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

hello,

sure you can upgrade your T40 with fingerprint.

You need the palm rest and drive guide rail assembly (i think it is called like this)

you should be able to use the fingerprint reader in windows, but bios protection like with t42 / t43 should not work.

thommyf , please post information if you are 100% sure about what you are saying. If it is your guess work please mention that clearly, there is nothing wrong about taking a guess, but claiming a guess to be a certainity will mislead others.

The T40 motherboard will not take the palmrest finger reader, the wiring connection to the reader is not there on the mobo, even though the physical connector from your palm rest fits on the motherboard perfectly.

Unless you change the motherboard to a T42 ( only some have finger print support ) or a T43 , the only other way is a USB reader. The power on security is not available on the usb reader, unless lenovo decides to support it in a future bios upgrade.
