Generic Intel 2100 card & T41

#1 Post by AIX » Fri Feb 24, 2006 9:12 am

I bought an Intel 2100 wifi card on ebay recently. The card was advertised as "Fits IBM Thinkpad". I asked the seller for the FRU PN and I was pointed to thinkwiki - so I assumed that was the right card for my T41. You cand see the auction here. I received the package today and I found that is a generic Intel card, not a "IBM" one.

Do you think is there any chance to get the card working without 1802 error? I don't want to open the case just for nothing..

Thanks!

Who knows? I'd handicap this for you but why not ask the seller himself/herself as ol' "morgie" is posting his/her wares right here on the forum now too ( http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=21107 ). As you will see by following the link to the eBay auction advertised there ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 6852462634 ), this is indeed the same person who sold the Intel 2100 card to you via auction. Small world huh? So send morgie a PM and let us know here if you get a response either way. I for one would be interested as I would only consider bidding on the other auction should I find morgie to be a good person who would answer relative questions after the sale.

Keep us informed.

Hi guys, 'tis me. As far as I know I advertised this card correctly and it should be good for your T41 - however I haven't fitted one myself - I hope someone else here can help to advise first. I will also try and track down someone else who I believe has fitted one to try and get you a definitive answer. Really sorry if this isn't right - if it's not sure we can work out a refund.

AIX,
I hope you felt this was a satisfatory reply. Maybe you two can get this to work? If not you were even offered to work out a refund.

Good Luck!

AIX - I've dropped you a PM too. As said if it's really not right for you we can work out a refund. Hopefully someone here with more knowledge of it all can clear it up one way or the other for good.

First - I want to thank you all for the answers.

GomJabbar - mine is 2100, the guys on anandtech are talking about 2200, but I found there a little info about 2100 too.

brainpicker - it was a satisfatory reply from morgie.

morgie, thank you for the fast reply/PM. The package arrived as you stated (~5 days).

I'll try to install the card this weekend, I'll keep you informed. Hope it'll works.

No problem AIX. Let's hope we hear back from an expert in this field on here first.

I've just heard from someone who tried this card on a T40 and it didn't work so unfortunately I think this would be the same for the T41  Drop me a PM AIX and let me know if you want to arrange a refund.

However, also been reading at ThinkWiki about some solutions. I would never recommend BIOS changes, but out of interest has anyone tried modifying the PCI-ID of a wlan card like this?

I installed the card yesterday, and I can confirm - the 1802 error is real :)
I don't wanna try the no-1802 BIOS hack, modifying the PCI-ID of a wlan card works only in Linux -unfortunately, so - I'm in the market for a "IBM" card again (make me an offer :) ).

morgie - I'm gonna tell you in a couple of days about your proposal to refund, I'm not sure yet, maybe I'll sell the card here (as in Bucharest), this seems easier than a refund.

Thanks.

Hi AIX, Hmm ok, sorry to hear this but I guess we suspected this by now . Ok, if you decide to sell that's cool - if you make a loss at all I'll cover the difference - hope that would help. If you make a profit then maybe that would bring some good out of this situation :P. Drop me a PM to arrange refund or discuss otherwise.
