cloning hard disk T41

#1 Post by apoc » Sun Feb 26, 2006 2:25 pm

Here's my problem: I do NOT have ultrabay slim secondary hdd adapter. Tomorrow I have to buy a new hdd and I desperately need to clone the old 40GB (which includes HPA + Windows XP NTFS + Linux ReiserFS) to the new 80GB. First two partitions (HPA and Widnows) are crucial for me. I only have usb adapter which let me connect ANY external drive (no matter 2.5" or 3.5"). How can I do that, step-by-step please? What BIOS settings should I use, and what tools then? Is anyone willing to share his experiences? Please help! Thank you in advance, best regards - MZ.

I have done this very successfully with a usb hd enclosure and Acronis TrueImage. I have not tried it with a dual boot disk.

Already tried that, but it seems without any success. It looks like it didn't clone HPA - nothing shows it's present on the disk connected via usb. Any ideas why? Thanks, regards - MZ.

And what happens if I set in bios security disabled? Will my XP destroy HPA? Or how can I make HPA visible with settings set to normal. Thanks, MZ.

If you boot up off of the CD that has the cloning software, then having the Predesktop security set to disabled should not be a problem. Just set security back to Normal after cloning. FTR, I disabled security for the Predesktop area to try and look at it from Windows. When I booted up into Windows, I still did not see the partition, so I rebooted and the set security back to Normal and no harm was done.

Acronis TrueImage 9 will successfully clone the hpa and make it bootable, I would look somewhere else for the problem, make some recovery CDs if you try disabling the predesktop are. :)

What bios settings did you use for cloning? MZ.
