How to Disable the TOUCHPAD?

#1 Post by SpunkyXL » Sat Mar 04, 2006 11:31 am

Reason I bought my T42p laptop was because of the nice trackpoint feature. Alot of the times when I rest my hand, it interferes with the touchpad. So, is it possible to just disable the Touchpad ? And just use the trackpoint?

Thanks..

If you have UltraNav driver installed, touchpad can also be disabled in Windows Control Panel Mouse settings.

Or with the ThinkPad Configuration program. I believe it requires a reboot to change.

... or the UltraNav wizard. (So sayeth the wise kings, three.) ;)

Not to mention turning it on and off from the UltraNav icon on the system tray.

Nice thing about the TPs, you have more than 1 way to do things, pick your favorite.

If you reenable that touchpad in bios, and run the Ultranav Wizard, you'll find that you can set up profiles for different ways of using it. Fer instance, the buttons can be mapped to Start Button, Minimize window, keyboard shortcuts, etc. Not sure if you can set hte pad itself to be non-responsive, but you can use it for page scrolling and customize four "shortcut" areas on the pad ... giving you virtually 6 different customized buttons on teh touchpad alone. Consider it....

That's why I love the UltraNav. I have the pointer movement disabled, but I have the tap zones and the touchpad buttons mapped to different things. It's like having an 8-button mouse...

14" T42p accepts touchpad-free palm rest

#7 Post by mrpaulin » Sun Mar 19, 2006 12:33 am

I hate touchpads, so I got the replacement palm rest for my 14" T41 that simply doesn't have the touchpad at all.

Part number is 91P8399 and the cost was less than $20 as I recall.

Lucky you!!!

I have the same problem with the Touchpad and I also hate the "flat rate' shipping on parts from IBM!!! If you are getting a lot of parts, it is great; but when you purchase one...it sucks!

I just went to order the part described above (before I saw this posting, and it runs $23!) and with shipping it came to $39!!!! I guess I will live with it a little longer until I see a cheap one on EBay.....

I neglected to mention that with the current FN key software on my T43 and T41 (YMMV), FN + F8 brings up a quickie-Dickie util to switch from Track + Touch, Track only, and Touch only. Completely forgot about it until the other morning when I was computing in bed and my tmmy was click TouchPad buttons.

The IT guy at work hates how i set up my T41 TouchPad because he expects it to be configured plain vanilla. I had to create a profile for when he's working on it. Lesson: you never know when someone will prefer using the touchpad over the eraser head.

The utility is cheaper than a new palm rest, too. ,:)
