Disk clone mystery

#1 Post by SCRAPS » Sat Mar 04, 2006 2:00 pm

Cloned a t40 40G drive to a 100G in Usb external enclosure with EZ Gig II.
The process worked accept for partition resizing. Eventhough EZ has options for making the partition bigger the software would not allow any changes.
It was suggested the 40 gig drive might have errors. It does not allow a check disk with both options checked. Also Sea tools disc check software causes the t40 to lock up.

Any ideas on getting the partition from the 40g to clone to the 100g and enlarge to use the rest of the drive?

Well i can't speak to your particular cloning software but i cloned a 40g to a 20g with acronis TrueImage with no problem, you might think about using it and starting over. I have also used Partition Commander to recover free space outside a partition and add it to one you specify.

How can the drive be checked for errors? In check disk when "auto fix file sysytem errors" is checked a message comes up "disk could not perform the utility needs exclusive access to files" then says it can check when the system is restarted. But on restart it says "Type of file system is NTFS cannot lock current file"

This is not normal. The first message is, but the message on reboot is not.

You didn't state who the manufacturer of the 40GB drive is, but you can try Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test. It will check for errors in non-Hitachi drives, but I believe it will only repair Hitachi drives.

I did not get the reboot check disk message correct its "type of the file system is NTFS cannot lock current drive"

The drive is the original in the T40, so probably a Hitachi. I did the Hitachi test booting off a cd, it checked out ok but its just a physical test not a file system test.

the manual says it will make an exact clone or compressed image, also that is will resize for the new drive, something sounds amiss if it is not showing that your new partition is size proportional to the new HD.
