When undocking or unplugging my T40, the screen doesn't dim.

When my laptop is docked and using AC power, the screen brightness should go to max. Similarly, when I unplug my T40, the screen should dim according to the settings in the Power Maximiser configuration.

Neither situation occurs. How can I fix this?

Why do you expect it to go to max? Do you have a power scheme set up that way?

I expect it to go to Max under AC conditions, and Level 1 under Battery conditions. Neither change.

Check the LCD brightness setting in BIOS, if it's HIGH then it will not dim on battery power (this dimming is separate and in addition to level adjustments in Power Manager).

If you are using the Thinkpad Default or Power Source Optimized power schemes (thse may be Power Manager 1.x specific themes), then it ought to change. I can't think of why. Do any of your other power related changes occur? Try making your own scheme and see what happens (use things like monitor turns off after 1 min, etc.).

Click on Access IBM button, Configure, Manage your Display, LCD Display Settings. This will pop up a window which shows you settings for brightness when running on batteries. You can set it to High or Normal.

Haha, I just remembered that I had some pics which illustrated what I was referring to. And you're right, you can make/check that setting in Windows. GAWD I love thinkpads. :D

Thanks, but that's not what I'm asking. I'm talking about how it should change LEVELS when I unplug my T40 from "Max" on AC Mode to "Level 1" on Battery Mode.

I came upon those pictures too when searching for an answer.

Maybe I am not being clear enough. My laptop running on battery shows the same levels as the AC, and this is the problem. The problem is that when I unplug my AC, the screen level should change to Level 1 (IE: It should be at the LOWEST LCD brightness, but right now, it is NOT).

Similarly, if I plug in my AC, it should go to the HIGHEST LCD brightness (of which it is not, it just stays the same at Level 1 when I plug in).

Sorry - maybe this makes more sense?

UPDATE: I found the problem! I had RMClock running on my computer. RMClock would set its own power scheme overriding my IBM ones.

By shutting down RMClock, it worked!
