1.6Ghz 2MB or 1.7Ghz 1MB which is better upgrade?
1.6Ghz 2MB or 1.7Ghz 1MB which is better upgrade?
Have done a search on 'cpu upgrade' but still cant seem to come up with a definitive answer on how many pins CPU my T40 will take.
Read in one post that all T40's are 478 pin and then another post stated 479 pins and now posted 'cmarti' is selling a 478 CPU on Ebay from his/her T40.
Can someone provide a definite answer and also any further tips on which CPUs will work with a T40.
Many thanks!

ok, heres how this goes... the p4, pentium m, and core duo all have hte same number of pins. they also all use the same FSB, and are all electrically compatable.
now then, the p4, the pentium M, and the core duo all have different pinouts. a pentium M will not fit in a core duo or p4 socket, just like the others will not fit in teh sockets meant for the other ones.
further, any processor listed with "479pin" on the intel spec sheet is actually a BGA chip, meant for low profile systems, like the X series.
so, any pentium M you get on ebay will fit in there. people dont sell BGA chips, they have to be soldiered to the motherboard. now then, for your T40, you need the latest BIOS and EC updates, and any Pentium M with the 400mhz FSB will work in your system. do not get a 533mhz part, it will not work.

Great explanation. Just wanted to chime in on the 533MHz CPUs on the T40-42. TECHNICALLY they will work, they will just run at 400MHz FSB speeds. So that fast 2.26GHz chip you may be eyeing, will max out at 1.7GHz - so it defeats the purpose.lithium726 wrote:ok, heres how this goes... the p4, pentium m, and core duo all have hte same number of pins. they also all use the same FSB, and are all electrically compatable.

while that is possible, its also possible they might not boot if the chipset cannot interpret the hi-lo signal coming from FSB signal pins... anyone tried that?

1.6Ghz 2MB or 1.7Ghz 1MB
Thanks for the all the replies chaps.
OK - one other question please...
Which do you think will be a better upgrade : 1.6Ghz 2MB or 1.7Ghz 1MB ?
I currently have a 1.3GHz 1MB

Depends...
It's subjective, and depends on your usage. This is what most will tell you.
But given the fact there's only .1GHz difference, I believe 1.6Ghz 2MB will give you more tangible boost in performance.

Hi, don't forget also that the 1.6/2M is a Dothan processor, and the 1.7/1M is probably a Banias (unless it is a celeron, in which case it will not have speedstep and other wonders), so the 1.6 will work much more relaxed i.e cooler not only due to the speed difference, but also the manufacturing technology used... and this is something your lap, table, ... will be gratefull for. So I'd also vote for the 1.6/2M.

I think a 1.8Ghz with 2Mb of cache is better.
And a lower price is perfect!!

Thanks cmarti - I already contacted you on Ebay about UK postage charge - but was concerned about being hit for Customs Duty etc when it comes into the UK. There is a real risk of the tax plus handling charge from the UK Royal Mail.
Plus your auction ends at 4am UK time so not really suited to my style of bidding (last minute!).
In the end I just did a BIN on a 1.6Ghz 2MB from a UK seller for £59.

It will run at 400, but the NB will not be that much cooler b/c I will still run the memory async at 533.nmuntz wrote:If you put a 400MHz chip in a Sonoma machine (T43) will it run at 400 or 533? That could be a way to underclock that NB that seems to throw so much heat.

I just wanted to ask again.. A PM 1.8 with 2MB will work in a T40 model 2373? It does not matter the particular system board that is in the system? Will I notice much change from a 1.3 with 1MB?lithium726 wrote: and any Pentium M with the 400mhz FSB will work in your system. do not get a 533mhz part, it will not work.
Thank you for your help,
