Noisy Fujitsu HDD in T42
Noisy Fujitsu HDD in T42
I'm getting kind of annoyed by the HDD in my T42. It's a Fujitsu MVH2060AH. I've heard that the Fujitsu's are supposed to be quiet but mine isn't. It is constantly spinning. Every once in a while it'll spin down because I have NHC and set it to enable spin down. But I've noticed that after it spins down, it'll spin up again if I try to do anything (click a link, open start menu, etc). Is this normal? Are there drivers/firmware or something that may fix this?
Perhaps it also has something to do with my RAM usage. I've noticed that NHC reports around 30% of my 512MB of RAM free with Firefox, AIM and and OpenOffice document open (along with the normal IBM stuff that runs on startup and some extras). Could that be part of the reason the HDD is almost constantly spinning? Perhaps something to do with page file swapping (not quite sure what it is though, just heard about it).
Thanks in advance!

That is really odd. My T42 (2378-fvu) has 40GB Fujitsu drive and it is the quietest drive out of all other HDs. Honestly I cannot hear it unless I put my ear on the palm rest.
It is quieter than Seagate 5400.2, Hitachi 7k60, and another 5400 rpm 40GB Hitachi that are in my other computers.
Has it always been noisy or is it something that has been happening lately?

Are your HDDs quiet as in they spin very quietly or they rarely spin? I'm pretty new to laptops, so I'm just wondering what the "norm" is for HDDs in laptops.
I think my fan is quieter than the HDD.

Would a firmware update possibly fix the problem? Found this on IBM/Lenovo site:

So are you actually "hearing" the noise coming from the HD or are you annoyed because it is always spinning?
In my T42, I don't know if it is spinning or not or if it is dead. It is absolutely silent all the time.
May be the 60 GB is different?
It would not hurt to upgrade the firmware.

I'm just kind of annoyed that it's constantly spinning because a lot of you guys say it's supposed to be silent. Also, it idles at around 33C all the time. Is that a little bit higher than what you guys have? I'm not so much worried about the temp than I am about the noise. But, in reality, it really isn't that annoying. Just would be nice if it was quieter.
Not to discredit what daeojkim said, but anyone else want to second/third the firmware update? If it's not too necessary, I won't even bother since it passes the PC-Doctor test just fine.
