interrupt sharing confusion
interrupt sharing confusion
I've asked this question before but I still don't understand.......
I've got the following interrupts not used on my T22:
2,5,6,7,10.
I experience choppy audio occasionally and don't understand why PCI steering uses interrupt 11 for all these devices:
modem, audio, USB Host Controller, Intel Mobile Combo Adapter, S3 Graphics, and both card bus controllers. I know that interrupt 5 is used for audio so why does XP not use it? Is there some secret to the 'Config' - PCI settings in my bios?
Thanks alot.

You sound like an old DOS/Win3.x user! Win XP over-rides the old legacy hardware settings. When the audio is skipping, press CTRL ALT DEL and open up Task Manager. Click on Performance and see if the CPU is in use 100%. The WMP graphics and animation can really suck up resources.
It could be a conflict but more likely high CPU utilization

Yeah, I've noticed before that my CPU utilization would be cruising along
and then WHAM! it hits 100%. I am an old DOS/Win3.1 user. I still don't understand why a 900MHz CPU can't play an audio file. I'm using Musicmatch. Nothing else is running except normal service stuff for XP.
Thanks for your reply.

Download and run Spybot Search and Destroy to see if you have any spyware. Then disconnect any always-on internet connection. See if you still have the problem with choppy playback. I don't think it's an IRQ conflict.

Thanks, sktn77a. I am slightly neurotic when it comes to Spybot, Ad-aware
Diskeeper, and NAV. You're right, though....it's not an interrupt problem. I've done all I know to do as far as startup under msconfig. I am also weird
about programs putting icons on the desktop and taskbar. I have a SOYO
board in my desktop with a Thunderbird 900 and I've never had any problem with anything. I've used Adobe Audition to do some heavy editing on WAV and MP3's. No problems. Maybe I should have 512 instead of 256 in the T22. Funny, though, that I haven't seen any posts on audio problems with T22's. A friend told me to dump XP and put 2000 on it cause it wasn't as much a resource 'hog' as XP. Don't know if I believe that, though. Thank you again.

Oh, yeah...I'm trying one more thing....found out under control panel/system that it said processor was 700 Mhz so I changed the settings under power management from portable/laptop to always on and now the CPU is listed as a 900. I'll let you know if this helped.

W2K is a better OS than XP for a laptop with a slow processor but I would think that a 700-900MHz prcessor could handle XP just fine. 512 Mb ram should help. I'm paranoid about putting excess software on my computers also, but I bite the bullet with Spybot and Norton. Incidentally, LiveUpdate can slow you computer to a crawl when it's running in the background.

I have the same identical problem with the audio, leasure98! I've been looking for someone that had this same problem since I got the laptop. I just wanted to see someone else that had this problem so I could assure myself that the hardware wasn't bad so I wouldn't have to live with the problem. You give me hope. I haven't got home to try this stuff out but according to this forum: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=62670#62670 You can go to http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... MIGR-40062 and download ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... psfd1a.exe to fix the problem. It says on IBM's site:

When/if you think your CPU is at 100%, pres CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up Windows Task Manager. Then, click on the Processes Tab. Then, click twice on the CPU Column to sort by CPU Usage Descending. You will then see which process is eating up your CPU, and if you wish, you can Right Click=>End Process to get rid of it. Then, try your Audio.
it only jumps to 100% when the audio tries to play because my audio freaks out. i think that ibm fix will help though. windows xp doesn't know to install it unless you install windows from your restore cd's, so you need the patch. here's the URL to try:
