Do trackpoint mouse buttons or palmrest ever develop wear?

#1 Post by bmfyxpp » Fri Mar 10, 2006 6:24 am

Wondering whether T4x users who have used their Thinkpads a lot over the past year or two noticed any wear on the mouse buttons or on the palmrest (the iBooks, for instance, are notorious for hideous gray stains).

Eagerly awaiting my T60 and wanting to know whether I should take some precautions to keep it looking pristine...

I'm pretty sure Kyocera is referring to the red caps on the TrackPoint stick. There are 3 models that I am aware of; Classic Dome, Soft Rim, or Soft Dome. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=18708

I have seen virtually no wear on the palmrest or (3) mouse buttons used with the TrackPoint (not to be confused with the caps mentioned above). The only thing that seems to show wear are the keyboard keys. The most used keys tend to get shiny after awhile.

The little trackpoint nub - no
keyboard keys - yup
the palmrest - yup

Maybe my hands are rougher than GomJabbar's :)

edit: I'll qualify it though -- it just gets "shinier", so it's not as bad as the powerbooks, and you can only notice it on the thinkpad at certain angles that reflect the light right. It doesn't look too bad at all, but it's there

The TrackPoint caps sure do get dirty (especially "soft dome"), and worn down, but I've yet to see a worn down TrackPoint button. What's to wear down and be discolored? They're black plastic. :?

The Trackpoint caps I can replace, so I'm not worried about it. The mouse buttons were a concern because the paint always wore off on my Dell and Toshiba laptops. Maybe I'm secreting acid...

Off to see a specialist about that...

After a couple of years of constant use the left mouse button on my T41 had a shiny black area on the othewise matt black surface (likewise the space bar). It certainly wasn't very noticeable close up, and from a metre away wasn't evident at all!

Cheers,

The keys get shiny after a while.

Trackpoint caps also wear. My soft dome seems to be in very good condition (gets dirty every now and then), but I've seen some people whose soft dome has become very stiff and uncomfortable.

Currently the most annoying thing on my T42 is that the middle scroll button has gotten somewhat squeaky and feels just a tad more loose.
