Missing Keyboard Button - Need Replacement button

#1 Post by lavalamp » Mon Mar 13, 2006 12:34 pm

Hi all,

The S key on my keyboard has gone missing. Any idea where I can get an individual button for replacement?

The keyboard works fine, it's Thai.

Thanks in advance.

I can give you the S key off a 560X keyboad I have, but I have no idea if it will work on your newer keyboard.

Thank you for the offer, but someone has to sell replacement key surfaces. The mechanism is fine where the key should be, I just need the little plastic "cap" that goes over top.

if its under warranty i think they send you an entire new keyboard
with screws) I think I have a t43 14.1 alps keyboard with a couple keys missing back in fl. If you still cant find the key, and the 14.1 alps keyboard matches next week gimme a pm, and I'll try to find it when I get back.

yea they will send you a new keyboard within 3 days if you thinkpad is still under warranty. I was lucky enough to get 2 keyboards. Lol, the dumb rep on the phone sent me a keyboard for 14in laptop instead of a 15 in. They say I could keep both keyboard.

I called IBM about the keyboard yesterday and I received a replacement keyboard today!

To make a short story long, the keyboard I received is the new FRU 39T0643 made in China. This is the replacement part for the "retired" FRU 93P4780 keyboard.

After a quick exam, the key mechanisms on both boards look the same. I'm not being scientific about this but will agree with the consensus that the made in Thai board has a better feel. Most notable is what I will call the "Dimple Point". This is the point where pressure is applied to a key that causes the dome under the key mechanism to collapse.

The dimple point on the Thai keyboard is more pronounced, it has more 'pop' giving you more feedback when the key is actually pressed. For the guitarists in the audience, think Telecaster.

The Chinese keyboard has a less 'pop' when the dome reaches its dimple point. The keys are simpler to collapse with a more linear feel. Again to use a guitar analogy: Les Paul. (Guitarists - I'm not talking about tone here, only about playability; you have to be deliberate to play a Telecaster.)

So to finish up my longer short story, I popped the key off the new board and snapped it onto my old keyboard. All is good.

Thanks for the key offers. If someone has a true "parts" keyboard and has a “S” key that will fit, let me know. It would be great to have a spare keyboard. My light is on.

Regards,

Final point:

Don't use a powerful vacuum to clean crud out of your board.

My lesson learned. (also learned vacuum has two u and no e)
