any reccommendations for a 2nd HDD in the ultrabay slot in the T43?

i need one for backup..

I have a Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM in the Ultrabay; works flawlessly.

Fujitsu MHV2080AH 80GB! This is the drive that IBM/Levono ships in many new T43s.

Well, you can get it off the Lenovo website; I think it is under Accessories.

The Ultrabay Slim HDD adapter is on sale for <$40 right now on the Lenovo site.

I've used Fujitsu 5400RPM 40GB, Hitachi 5400RPM 80GB, Hitachi 7200RPM 60GB, Seagate 5400RPM 100GB and the new Seagate 5400RPM 160GB drives in Ultrabay Slim (and Ultrabay 2000) HDD adapters without issues.

I've also installed (and booted from) the Seagate 5400RPM 160GB drive (internally, not in an adapter) in my T41 without errors or warnings.

When things like this happen! I just jump for joy..LOL!

For months I was waiting for a good deal on the 2nd HDD adapter, about two weeks ago I caved in and picked one up for $60 shipped.....now they are on sale and to add insult to injury they have free shipping.....

But all things condidered is it a great addition to a TP!

This thread raises something I've been pondering lately.... I'm re-thinking my video capture setup, since my 5400 rpm HDD may not be quite adequate. So I've been eyeing the new Firewire 800 external HDDs as a capture (and storage) solution (already have a USB 2.0 120 GB drive, I could use that at work).

Now here's an interesting alternative ... getting an Ultrabay 2000 adapter and putting a fast HDD in there? (I usually have the MultiBurner there, and leave the UltraBay Slim battery in my T43.) Or get an UltraBay Slim adapter and use a second, fast HDD in the TP for capturing, and video editing...?

Any suggestions or ideas?

Here's a crazy one ... would the UltraBay Slim HDD adapter fit into my Dock II UltraBay 2000 adapter for Slim optical drives? (Both the Slim HDD adapter and 2000 HDD adapter are about the same price through my purchase channel.) Anyone ever done this?

Also ... and I'm playing my dummy card here ... what drives do these take? Standard 2.5" drives by Hitachi, Fujitsu, et al? TIA.

Now what I'm trying to figure out is whether I should give up 20gigs and go for the 7200rpm of the Hitachi or as Bill suggested, the 5400rpm Fujitsu MHV2080AH 80GB...

guess thats not an issue anymore, newegg also has the 80gig version of the 7200rpm hitachi...decisions decisions

Actually, as far as I know, PATA drives don't natively support hot-swapping...That support is provided by the OS; SATA II supports both hot-swap and native command queueing as well, which PATA doesn't natively support either.

Although it is important to point out that all the PATA disks I have used in my 2nd HDD adapter went though a hotswap with no problems whatsoever; so you can indeed pull them out and put them back in while the Thinkpad is running.

Sorry that no one replied before this Dave.

Get a 2nd HD adaptor for each of the configurations you have, e.g. UltraBay Slim and Ultrabay 2000. (There's an adaptor that allows one to put UltraBay Slim devices in an Ultrabay 2000, but it costs almost as much as a 2nd HD adaptor for that form factor!)

Then you can just pull the HD from whichever adaptor and throw it in the other to transfer files.

Yes, the adaptors take any 9.5mm thick 2.5" HDs. The ultrabay 2000 will also take 12.5mm thick drives.

Sounds like a winning proposition. And since a second HDD can be used entirely for ripping, video capture, etc., it frees up primary drive space for less ephemeral use. You guys've sold me.

I have that little Ultrabay 2000 adapter, to put my Multiburner+ drive in ... works wonderfully. Makes the Dock II really useful. Think I may get the Ultrabay Slim HDD adapter [edit] (62P4554?) while the shipping is free ... and just ... see if it fits in the 2000 adapter. Hunch is: it will.

Darn someone here mentioned a great source for hard drives, low prices.... But what I'm curious about here is ... what is the spec that we're looking for in T40s ... ATA-6? I'm looking for a big, 7200 rpm drive .. but the series of acronyms (incuding PATA, SATA II) are throwing me off. Suggestions?

PATA, ATA-6.

Good sources for HDs are www.zipzoomfly.com and www.newegg.com.

Hitachi 7K100 is an excellent choice for a 7200RPM 100GB HD.

Thanks. There are probably other makes and models which would work as a 2nd drive, but common experience is a good guide. Watching prices now....

You're welcome Dave.

Any of the latest 2.5" HDs will work just fine in both of your machines and the adapters. I only push the Hitachi HDs as a matter of "better the devil you know" as I've had years and years of good service from them.

The latest Fujitsus are known for being very quiet, while the Seagates are known for good speed and a 5 year warranty.

I just got off the phone with tech support on Fri. They told me that the ultrabay drive caddy took SATA drives?! And that that was the kind of drive in my T42p 2373-ktu (bought 1 year ago). How do I verify this without taking out my HD? I really don't have confidence in their answer as they originally tried to tell me that the ultrabay 2000 was the correct product - only after I insisted that it wouldn't work did they look into it further. They actually had to call me back as it took them 1/2 an hour to look up the info...

WTH did you bother calling Tech Support?

They're right, and they're wrong. The caddy for the T60 series takes SATA HDs, the one YOU need is the "Second HDD Adapter for Ultrabay Slim, Part No. 62P4554" which takes PATA HDs.

I'm mildly surprised to hear this. Was assuming it's not possible, for no reason other than it's not mentioned in Lenovo/IBM documentation as being possible.

Just a warning... I purchased the Hdd slim adaptor and it works great! Yet the software IBM/Lenovo gives you to clone your drive (if you want to do this) is worthless. In order to create the boot disk (with the ez-gig program) you have to use a computer that has dos (not NT, so win95 or win98). I just used a third party app.

I put a Hitachi 7k100 7200 rpm 100 GB drive in one this week, and it's working just grand. Thanks to all whose tips and suggestions eased my confidence through the purchase.

Why does IBM even ship the floppy with the 2nd HDD adapater?

If you happen to have a floppy disc drive and a cable adapter so you can connect the floppy drive to the TP without using the ultrabay, the EZ Gig software on the floppy that Lenovo ships with 2nd HD adapter works great and is simpler & easier to use than most other programs for cloning. (I use Acronis TI as well so I know of what I speak, but Acronis is more flexible with more options and features.) Anyway, no dos or OS is required for EZ Gig. You simply boot from the EZ Gig floppy with the target hard drive in the ultrabay, hit two or three keys and the cloning begins. I find it very convenient for routinely backing up my entire hard drive to a drive I can just swap into the primary slot if ever needed.

The EZ Gig floppy only has 10 licenses (will only clone 10 different drives) though. Still I think it's pretty nice they throw it in as a free extra with the 2nd HD adapter.
