how to check new ThinkPad?

Has there been a good summary on how to check your new arrived ThinkPad - what things you look for and what kind of testing you do?
Thanks for any suggestion. This one (T42, 15'') is my first IBM and actually my first computer.

To my mind by far the most important thing for me was the yellow feather I found inside the box...

I realise this will surprise, but I'm actually quite serious - it was somehow quite reassuring to find 'the' feather from Bill - this said, I think I'll do as Nonny suggests...I've lived alone too long!

LOL I wasn't telling you to use the feather, Ian! I was telling the original poster to use his TP to see if it worked! But that was pretty good...

(I have one of Ma's feathers...)
