Digital Monitor Output

I have a T-42 with Radeon 7500.

If I'm getting an external LCD monitor (whatever the best I can get is for $500-700), is it worth getting a Dock or Port Replicator so I can drive the monitor digitally through DVI? Has anyone done this and do you really see a difference?
