Question regarding warranty for thinkpad T42

#1 Post by coolname1 » Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:36 am

Ok, I'm planning to replace the Lcd casing since there's a crack in the front. At the same time, I also want to get my LCd replaced since it is still under warranty. My main concern is that:
Should I change out the lcd casing before send it in to IBM to get the lCD replaced? Will that void the warranty for the laptop? I'm afraid that IBM might think the lcd is messed up due to the crack on the casing( I accidenttly bumped the front corner agasint the wall causing it to cracked). Reason I want to get the LCd replaced due to a few dead pixel on the screen + the burned spots on the bottom corners.
Any helps, tips, advices would grealy be appreciated. Thank you!

my advice find a set of screws, the ones with blue seal, change the cover and then send it to ibm.

it depends in what kind of mood is the service dude. for ex in romania they try EVERYTHING possible not to change the failing thing, and in switzerland they send it home in less than 24 hrs.

my advice: first fix the panel! if they see it was opened, tell them you installed new wifi antenas but DONT send it cracked.

what'd you think if you'd get a cracked panel?

This product has a three year limited warranty which includes a warranty upgrade. This product is entitled to parts and labor and is entitled to IBM EZServ. This machine is also entitled to the IBM Thinkpad Protection Service. Customers may call the IBM HelpCenter (800-IBM-SERV) for more information.

Just double checked my warranty coverage. By reading the above statements, I think I have accidental coverage warranty. Does that mean I don't need to replace the lcd case and just send it straight to IBM instead?

IBM Thinkpad Protection Service is supposed to mean that accidents are covered (even though your's is only partially an accident).

Call, verify all the issues are covered, and, if so, send it in. Otherwise, go to plan B, swapping parts prior to sending.

Please post the results.

Here's an Update,
I've sent my T42 in last Monday and just got it back as I'm typing. The whole LCD casing + LCD panel were replaced. I have no prolem with it whatsoever. Here come the best part though, there is now a supervisor password set that I wasn't ware of! Just called them up again and it looks like I'm going to have to send it in 1 more time. I hope I'm getting the laptop back with problems free this time

Nice result. I think most fixes are smooth, but when one goes bad, it is frustrating. I have had one bad and dozens of good experiences over the years (I handled a corporate fleet of TPads.)
