Why worry about a sudden temperature drop? I have seen my T43 jump 10 degrees in 2-3 seconds in those kind of situations. Unless there is CPU and/or GPU throttling going on, you are safe. :)

I could be wrong, but I read it that the OPs concern is over the high temps while playing games, not the sudden drop in temp afterwards.

yup, i just wondering is this normal thing that the tem is so high with level 7 fan?
its just star craft.
someone says their t43 can keep the tem around 40c in any situation.

My T41p regularly goes to 80°c during intensive GIS processing and I've had it since December 2003. I don't think it is anything to worry about.

My T42 (Dothan) usually hovers at the high seventies under 100% load, but I _have_ seen it exceed 85 degrees in some (rather rare) cases. I know because it causes NHC to throw a warning. I never saw the PC crash or reboot because of that, and if you aren't experiencing issues, I'd say you shouldn't worry.

How can you tell what temp your chip is? Is this part of the standard IBM load? Where is it in the menu?

If you hit around 88 deg C then the bios will throttle back the CPU... that has often been the cause of games slowing down and low 3dmark scores. I have my setup with tpfancontrol set something like:

40deg - fan 1
45deg - fan 2
50 deg- fan 4
55deg - fan 8
60deg -fan 16
65deg - fan 32
70deg - fan 63 (max fan from what I understand)
80deg - fan 128 (bios control to throttle)

So far, I haven't seen temps go over 65deg this way. Used to get over 80deg. This is probably good since I understand overheating can shorten the life of CPU/GPU and other components. Will be much cheaper to replace the fan than the systemboard if the fan goes because I am using it more. I am also using NHC to lower the voltage of the CPU.

Never exceeded 73 degrees c on a 1.7 Ghz T42 2379-DXU. Tested by looping http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=12850 four times.
There's a built-in shutdown protection in all P-Ms that will shutdown the PC at 100 degrees c.
