T43, Fan goind bad?

#1 Post by alpuzz » Sat Mar 25, 2006 11:13 am

Hello,

I've had my T43 for a little less than a year. Last night, after the machine had been running all day, I started to notice a funny buzzing sound emanating from the fan, almost as if something is either caught in it, or a bearing is going bad. This morning when I restarted, the fan sounded fine for the first 45 minutes or so, and then the noise again became noticeable. It also seems to fluctuate in intensity if I move the machine. For example, if I tilt it with the fan vent down, it seems louder. At present, the fan is still doing its job, and air flow doesn't seem impaired. I guess my questions are as follows:

1. are there any fixes I can try that don't involve digging deeply into the machine? I'm comfortable removing the keyboard, but wouldn't want to go much further than that.
2. I currently have the eZ serv warranty. Is it possible to upgrade to onsite after the fact and if so, how would that work? Could I upgrade and then immediately open a service call, or am I basically stuck with needing to ship it off assuming it does need servicing?
Any info would be great.

Call IBM, but I'm pretty certain you can upgrade to onsite. IMHO that would be a good idea. I don't like ez-serv personally, after a bad experience.

I don't think there is any "easy fix", but to replace the fan. Could either do it yourself (some digging) or call support.

You can try the WD-40, just take the fan out and add some WD-40 in the axis.
