DVD-RAM not working.

#1 Post by suzannetf » Sun Mar 26, 2006 11:06 pm

My CD and DVD burner is not reading CDs or burning. I was advised to disable the drive and enable it. I've done this several times and no change. (Restarted as well.) Any other advice?

Any clicking? I have had all functions DIE once the lens can't be adjusted properly (clicking from drive). There are different wave-lenths used for DVD reading, burning etc...so if you can not do either then it is either a driver issue or the drive is DOA.

Do you get a "insert" media when trying to do any read-write functions with media insterted?

Put some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip (do not use any menthol, or medicated rubbing alcohols) and GENTLY clean the lens...do not put too much pressure or alcohol; as the lens could overfill and fluid will drop inside the optics and or coils (just let it dry overnight if this happens), too much pressure can damage the sensitive lens mechanism (up/down movement of the lens)

No clicking. I put the CD or DVD in and the light just flashes for a second and then nothing. It does not register in My Computer at all.

Can you hear the media "spin"? Can you see the drive under "My Computer"?

PS: If the system is still under warranty, call IBM; you will have a replacement drive by Tuesday if you call on Monday....Assuming that you live in the USA (not sure how it works outside the US) You might want to update your infor with at least your location!

As I posted in the general hardware and software forum.

Go to my comptuter.. once inside right click on the Cd drive.

Go to properties.

Go to the tab that says DLA, inside there disable the check box that says use DLA.

For your situation, go to device manager and uninstall the device. Reboot. Leave DLA disabled and try to burn media.

In the event that it does not, you can almost gurantee a defective drive.

DLA can cause the drive not to read either? I never liked DLA and never install it (do a non OEM OS load, on all machines I own), due to burning issues in the past, but never read problems with media.

If it can go wrong with a CD Drive, DLA can cause it. Aside from it not being detected in bios. :)

Ok. I'm in the properties window of my UJ-812 DVD-RAM drive. The tabs are GENERAL, AUTOPLAY, HARDWARE, and RECORDING. Where is the tab you're telling me about?

Personally, i think the DLA program (ie: CDRW-RAM or DVD-RAM) cause more trouble than it is worth.

I for one uninstall it and never use it again.

What would this do? The thing is you have to have a floppy drive... and I don't.

It's always a good idea to have an external lying around. However I don't really believe a firmware update will fix the problems with the drive. It might need to be replaced.

Yay! The IBM guy put in another DVD-RAM and it worked. So I have that one signed out until my new one comes in! :)
