T42 Advice

#1 Post by aquina » Sun Jul 25, 2004 6:36 pm

Boy, never knew who difficult it is to pick out a laptop.
The more I read the more I get confused.
Guess it is a typical case of analysis paralysis.

Here is what I am down to now:

T42

want the 15 inch screen with SXGA resolution as that seems to get the best reviews on image quality and portability is less important to me

9600 graphics card to make it more future proof

Dothan processor 1.7 (figure the increase to 1.8 is negligible)

Would like to stay in the sweet spot of the cost/benefit curve

Taking it all together the choice seems to be the 2373JXU for $1700 plus tax and shipping

Product Description IBM ThinkPad T42 2373 - Pentium M 735 1.7 GHz - 15" TFT
Dimensions (WxDxH) 3 12.2 in x 10 in x 1.1 in

Anyone see a problem with this setup?
Would you change anything?

Really appreciate suggestions as I am all over the place on this issue.

Yes, that's the model.

The OSU discount brings it down to $1702.14 (plus tax and shipping)

Does it look like a solid choice?

Yes! Get it and don't think twice! The rest of us can't get discounts anywhere close to that!

I am looking for nearly the same configuration and I also get some analysis paralysis.
I think the weight you have listed is not correct. Must be somethink near 5.9 or 6 lbs (2.7 kg). It might be a little heavy but there is no bright 14" with FlexView (I like sitting outside :) )
As you are talking about the future: This model has no bluetooth.
Are there any fan problems with this model? Is the fan noise less with a 1.7 GHz processor instead of 1.8?

I wish I could find a model for nearly the same price in Germany.

If you go to any educational institution at the University level you might get good discounts through your school. My school has the 2373-3VU for a mere $2000, considering what you get that is heck of a price.... but for my needs I'd stick with an X31. :D

I actually ordered the 2373JXU today. It was between the 14.1 SXGA+ for 50 less or the 15 SXGA+. I felt that this suited my needs the best and that the price was unbeatable. I'm hoping it ships a LOT earlier than they estimated. As soon as the laptop ships, I'm going to place an order with Crucial for the 512.

The price is  !

Seems like some schools have super deals with IBM. Sadly my school's offers are not even as attractive as those on the IBM educational sales site or Bill's. In the end I just ordered from IBM cos I got a discount on a 2378 model.

Hey thats a really awesome deal ... My university does not have a deal with IBM, and so the best I can get with those specs (rather with only 256mb RAM is $2274 including tax and shipping) ... I'd say go for it ... I have emailed IBM to inquire about any general student discounts not linked with any particular university ...

:)

Sigh, some schools have all the discounts hehe :)

Cheers

Flounder,

I am in the same situation as yourself, my school does not have any deals with IBM directly. I prefer IBM and therefore very interested in the response you get from your e-mail inquiry to IBM regarding student discounts. Please let us know what you find out, or if you prefer e-mail me at ianb@taylorinc.com

Thanks,
Budge

Also be sure to put Thinkpad in the subject line, otherwise his anti-spam filter will toss it.
