Some characters don't display correctly

Can you read this? 
In my word it's 4 wingdings picked at random. On my PC in this composing window it's 4 little squares. I see those little squares all over the Internet at various normal and ordinary web sites, sometimes in a context that looks like it is just a double quote, ", or something just as common. Here is one from Earthlink webmail: What’s new. On my PC here now the character between What and s is a little square box. I copy it to Notepad, it's STILL a little square box.

Is something in my video setup not right? Is there some IE setting I need to straighten out?

Running XP patched up to date. T43 with "Graphics by ATI" sticker on the front.

My guess is that you need to uninstall then reinstall the font you are using.

If you have a Microsoft Office application, there is an addition to it that adds extra fonts ect (proofing tools); if you active the correct "keyboard" by changing the language type, under word(or office app) you will see it as "words/characters" if you try to type the same thing "outside" of the office apps, you will get the squares!!!!

That is the only solution that I can come up with, I have the proofing tools and this HAS happened to me more then once.......I also managed to type chinese into my yahoo login prompt...I still have not solved that one!!!
