One of my friends and researchers in the labs has a T40 he bought when they first came out; it has been through just about everything I can imagine and it is still doing fine...Looks like it will last another 3 years without any further problems.

How long a lifw
Well I lent my friend a 760 2 months ago that has been in daily use since purchase, he manages 26 acres of land and takes it with him everywhere...
So going by IBM laptop builds you should get many more years of use out of it.

IME for as long as you can resist purchasing a new one.rainie wrote:i bought a T40 in 3 years ago, it's still working well now. but i wanna know how long its life will be? lookin' forward to yr answer!
My 600X served me faithfully for three years, with some upgrades, and literally traveled the world, usually the equivalent of steerage class and winding up slung over my shoulder as I climbed a pilot ladder.
It's been my son's daily driver for the past three years, squished into his Jeppesen case and thrown in and out of innumerable aircraft cockpits. He won;t give it up for love, money nor the offer of a T40.
Given proper care and feeding your T40 will last until you're tired of it.
Regards,
James

My T40p (like myself) is particularly fond of ribs. Its always a bit of a fight when we have to decide who will eat the last one . . .
. . . yes, yes, we eat from the same plate. Whats it to you?
Be careful since IBM may void your warranty if they find evidence of that you have you machine on this diet as they only recommend a high electrolyte diet.

James and Smugiri; you two are hilarious.
That would be a great book, wouldn't it? "The Thinkpad Diet; far better than the Atkins Diet."

Long.
When you think about it, the there aren't that many parts to a laptop and all can be replaced.
So, a failure of one of the two most expensive parts, the system board (planar in IBM parlance) or the LCD, would cost you less than $200 to fix yourself. That price is for new parts from eBay.
If parts remain available, and they certainly have for nearly all ThinkPads ever made, you can keep a T40 or any ThinkPad alive as long as you wish.
A better question would be how long do those two parts typically last? It certainly varies with some becoming defective quickly, but system boards and LCDs routinely last longer than five years.
Considering you can upgrade the CPU's of the T-series to at least 2.1GHz Pentium M's, useful life will be long, too.
Care is important with the T-series. They are at the extreme of engineering thinness.

Actually, my biggest problem is usually that the darn things WON't wear out.
I have a tough time justifying to myself the purchase of the latest and greatest while old reliable is still plugging along.
After a few years I start wishing for a major failure so I can get that hot new machine with the dual exhausts and integrated screen wiper. But I always break down first, and uisually just find another use for the old one.
FWIW - I used my T20 for 5 years before I got my T42. The T20 is currently being used by my 20 sometthing kid.

T40 Lifetime: 12 months (expected) for me!
I'm on my 3rd T40 corporate laptop in 3 years. The lower mouse buttons wear out pretty quickly. Also annoying is that the case is poorly made on the right side, and carrying the laptop while open results in the plastic case cracking on the right side. Anyway, the mouse button issue is a serious flaw in an otherwise wonderful laptop....
