Warranty Extension

#1 Post by lilserenity » Mon Jul 26, 2004 10:52 am

Hiya,

I haven't posted in a while, because for the past 3 weeks almost I have been in Chicago Il., as opposed to the UK :) And I have been too busy pottering around the place with my girlfriend on her motorcycle (off to Sturgis soon) to post this question...

Anyway... I finally got the T23 with SXGA+ screen, woohoo! I now have a very nice kick [censored] system, 48gb hard disk, wireless built in, 1gb of ram, win xp pro and yes, that [censored] SXGA+.

The only thing is; is that this is an IBM remanufactured product; not a brand new one, and as such the warranty expires this November/December. My T23 at home which I am selling has a warranty that expires in November 2005. My question is...

...how do I go about getting a warranty upgrade/extension on this machine? I'm in the US till August the 11th; and then back to old Blighty ;) (though I am sure to be here sometime soon again) - and so it needs to be valid there.

Ideally it would be nice to get something like 2 years service, drop in service is fine (ie: where you take it to the courier opposed to someone from IBM popping by), since I can quite see myself using this T23 for some years to come. (Since I have now substantiated that this T23 is just a bit faster than my girlfriend's P4 1.8ghz desktop, not kidding either...)

Any ideas will be appreciated; I have too many emails to reply to, but that ain't gonna get done now, need to pop out and get some food in, ran out of milk and no coffee at all so far this morning!!

Anyway bye for now!

Directly from the referenced upgrade webpage: "Warranty service upgrades can only be ordered for in-warranty, non-refurbished machines that were purchased in the U.S."

Sometimes, and I do mean rarely, they will allow you to upgrade the warranty on a refurbed machine. If you purchased a machine that was described as a refurb that was in reality a unit returned under the 30 days no questions asked policy, you can sometimes get a warranty extension.

A unit that was truly refurbed, e.g. a broken unit that was repaired and then sold, will normally have it's serial number changed to something that will indicate it's status as a refurb.

The only sure way to tell if you can upgrade or not is to call IBM.

Hiya,

Many thanks for the replies, that helps a great deal!

Obviously I am back safe from Sturgis, SD having travelled some 2,600 miles on the back of a bike, tell you something my [censored] aches!!!

I shall check this out when I am back in England. I leave Chicago on Wednesday back for England. BOO!

Fingers crossed on the warranty, sod's law will be that it develops an issue after expiring! We shall see.

The unit by the way looks utterly mint as if there was never a broken part; I'd say it was returned in the 30 days period, as the date on the serial label says Novemeber 2001 (11/01 to be precise) and the warranty expires end of Nov this year; my guess is that signifies the manu. date and that it was returned without any real problem, but that's just an assumption!

Anyway must go, gonna make my last few days in the US (for this time count!) I'm off dress shopping... wheee :) Thanks again!
