How do I get rid of all the applications/services IBM loads?

#1 Post by Basar » Thu Mar 30, 2006 3:19 pm

So I used the Recovery tool to do a fresh format, and installed Windows XP on my computer from the Recovery and Restore tool. Well, IBM loads too much crap with fresh installs. I just want to keep IBM Access Connections, nothing else. Can anyone help me here? I don't want it to install anything!

Go through you system and remove all the pre-loaded applications that you want to get rid of; either going through all the cruft manually or through a fresh XP Install. Then download Access Connections from the Lenovo Site and install it. :)

This comes up many times :(

You need the IBM drivers for Audio, Video, Wired NIC, Wireless NIC, Modem, Hard Drive Protect, Mouse (UltraNav), and (you seem to agree) Access Connections.

After that, Presentation Director, Software Installer, and ThinkPad configuration are all useful. Further, they don't consume any CPU and little memory.

All of the above can hardly be described by any reasonable person as "a bunch of crap"

There isn't much left to delete. But remove at will.

I agree, the onlt things you might want to to remove are the things that start at boot like:

- ibmmessage (kinda useless if you ask me)
- onscreen display (you'll loose the functionality and save very minimal resources)
- capslock/screenlock indiccator (again you'll loose the functionality)
- Hard drive protect (Its a usefull feature, so keep it)

Realistically it won't save you hardly anything in boot time or resources.

Unlike Sony for example IBM don't seem to install lots of useless demo software and other 'crap' which isn't essential. What they do install that you may not consider essential (above) can be removed with add/remove programs easilly.

I agree that IBM stuff comes in handy, BUT the Acess Connections takes over one minute to load when I switch between work and home. Finding that new IP-adress or whatever it´s doing is a bit frustrating.

Basar ... run APPWIZ.CPL ... remove what you don't want. But don't squawk if suddenly on-screen indicators disappear, FN key utilities don't come up, etc. One man's "crap" is another person's indispensible tool. YMMVAPW.

marvel - i think that this may be caused by you having too many profiles checked as a start up option. I mainly use it at home - so I only have 1 profile for start up.

When going to a new location, if i'm in a hurry, i'll manually disconnect before putting the computer into sleep mode. At the new location, i'll manually select the profile that I want to use. This keeps it from trying all of my different profiles (about 7) to find the right one.
