Help picking out a laptop...t41p or t42p
i recently bought the following thinkpad:
1.70 GHz Intel® Pentium® M
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
512 MB
60 GB
14.1" SXGA+ (1400x1050)
Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection 802.11b and Bluetooth
128MB ATI Mobility FIREGL T2,
for roughly the same price i could get the following t42p:
'2373H14'
IBM ThinkPad T42p
Pentium M 1.8 GHz
RAM 512 MB
HD 60 GB
802.11 B/G - Intel, Bluetooth
Win XP Pro
14.1" SXGA+ TFT
M10GL-128
the only differences that i noticed between the laptops is the graphics cards (big difference??), the wireless card (i bought an a/b/g adaptor for my 41p), and the 1.7 ghz vs the 1.8ghz. Is there really that big of between the 1.7 and 1.8 that would justify exchanging my computer?? I'm new too the forum btw...happy to be here

Re: Help picking out a laptop...t41p or t42p
I guess you have a T41p (2373GGU). Actually M10GL-128 stands for the same video card you have. The CPU speed difference is very small, so I wouldn't exchange it.

It seems you have a T41p with 'b' statndard only wireless.
No big difference in processor, as Gman said.
The 802.11b standard lwill last long, and hope that'll serve your purpose. If I were you, I keep this and put a new card when new technologies like superG or even 802.11n in future arrive in IBM.

The T42p has a faster DVD/CD-RW or multi-burner. You might want to factor that into your consideration.
The difference between a 1.7GHz Banias and a 1.8GHz Dothan might be noticable under stressful conditions but under normal circumstances it's not very significant. We don't run benchmarks all day, do we?

Here is a nice article about basic differences between Banias and Dothan from Anandthech:vrs626 wrote:is the difference in the prcoessor a result of the t41p having a bania and the t42p having a dothan or is it becuase one is 1.7 and the other is 1.8...so would there be a difference between a 1.7 dothan and a 1.7 bania??

Benchmarks show some inprovement but as rhema83 pointed out we don't run benchmarks all day. So I'm not sure how noticable real-life improvements are.
Yeah, definitely do the switch. That way you can have a shot at having the keyboard no one likes, a screen with problems you don't have now, and you get the joy of setting everything up from scratch again, including reinstalling all your software. If you're really lucky, you'll get a wiggly battery, and the hard drive will suffer an accident in shipping, putting you back another week without a computer. What could be better?
. . . .keeping the one you have, maybe.
