No, because it is a generic Intel card; you need an IBM one.

Your lappy won't know the difference bettwen that card and the ibm one.

So don't worry, buy it.

T40

All T40's have built in antenna's... As far as working in every laptop, I would think it would work in newer laptops, i.e. after T30's...

No they don't! Its only the wireless upgradeable T40 models which have the 802.11 antennas pre-installed.

Cheers,

The standard Intel 2200BGs certainly can be made to work in a Thinkpad T4x models, as I run several here, but it does require installing the "1802" CMOS tweak and some convenience fetaures, such as Fn+F5 control support, are not available.

Installed the Cisco card without a problem.
The T40 had the aerial antenae in place already.
Windows XP recognised it and was running on wireless straight away.
Only connects at 11Mbps but I think that is sufficient for general web browsing at home. Unless anyone can persuade me to go for a faster card?

Sorry Bill, but ALL T40s have the antennae installed at the factory.

NO!

It will only take an IBM adapter! They have a CMOS change on them and the machine will throw back an error with anything but an IBM card!

I just call them as I see them!

Maybe all the retail configurations did, but I have had occasion to take apart several examples of the specific corporate T40 build our global corp bought (2373-something or other... its while since I've actually seen one), and about 20% of those simply didn't have wi-fi antennas installed....very inconvenient!

I suspect these wifi-less T40s may have been from our earliest T40 purchases, but as my "support" activities are purely ad-hoc, to keep consulting group colleagues going when out in the field, I don't keep records.

We have around 80,000 staff worldwide, and purchase a non-trivial number of Thinkpads each year (and have done so for a long time), but wireless capability wasn't on the corporate connectivity agenda when the T40 was introduced.

Cheers,

Bill

Don't we all.

I'd love to determine the exact model number if you were to recall it.

According to the HMM for the T4Xx series machines, the antennae were installed in every 14.1" and 15" unit, including the CTO models.

Please don't take this the wrong way M8, but the antennae in the upgradable units are tucked away under the keyboard surround and one often has to do a bit of fishing around to winkle them out of their hiding place. Is it possible you could have simply been unable to find them?

I can't match your installed base of Thinkpads among my clients, although I can count some close friends whose employers far outstrip it, but I can't duplicate your finding and neither can they when queried in a brief phone call.

But, if I'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time IBM bowled me a bad delivery.
