Sorry for the dumb question, but this is my first post and I am looking to purchase a thinkpad very soon.

What's the dumb question?

Ahh now I see it's the subject
The main difference that I know of is the active hard drive protection and some of them have PC2700 Ram.
Those are the 2 main differences I think.

He was asking about the T41/T42, not T40 ;) Anyway, the main differences:

SXGA+ T42s have Radeon 9600s, whereas SXGA+ T41s have 9000s
1.7 GHz and above T42s have 2nd generation (Dothan) Pentium Ms, but T41s all have 1st (Banias).
T42s are available in 14" and 15" sizes, but T41s only come in 14"

Both have active hard drive protection and PC2700 ram.
