Video on TV

#1 Post by venik » Sat Apr 01, 2006 3:31 am

I connected my T43p through the S video out socket to the S video input on my TV, lowered the LCD resolution to 800X600, directed the display to go to the TV, made sure the format was set to NSTC M, and tried to play a movie (avi, mpg, mov..) on the Thinkpad, hoping to see it on the TV.
I saw the TP screen on the TV (icons, player, mouse cursor), but the movie itself did not appear: the player's screen remained black. What am I doing wrong?

I am not sure what you mean. As my post says, I see on the TV screen EVERYTHING that is on the computer screen, except for the actual movie. I went to ControlPanle/appearance/settings/advanced/display and chose the TV, as recommended by the Thinkpad instructions on the subject. I did not see anything about Primary Display.

Sounds like an overlay problem. See if you can fiddle with the 'overlay' options tab. If i have time i'll try it out later

I experienced the same problem with my T41, figured it was because it was an older TV so I didn't spend much time on it.

kam_ is correct. Right-click on an open area of the desktop. Choose Properties > Settings > Advanced > Overlay > Theater mode options... > Theater Mode. At least this is where you find it with the ATI Radeon display adapter driver installed.

If you can see everything else on the desktop except the video your actually watching then it has to be an overlay problem and not resolutions or frequency.

The normal GPU blanks a section of memory which is mapped to the display and the video acelerator fills that memory. Its similar to how some TV vards work. sometimes you see a green rectangle where the video card releases memory access for the TV card to fill.

So if you're seeing everything else then the GPU is working corectly to display the desktop and releasing the memory for the section where the video should be displayer, but the video accelerator isn't filling it.

Well, I finally got it to work. It was the OVERLAY settings that needed to be changed. Why their default values were not set for playing movies is not clear, but now everything is good-- I can watch movies played on the laptop on the TV screen.
Thanks for the help.

IMHO, the quality will seem better because of the motion. With a still image, you begin concentrating on the details.
