2915 to replace 2100, plug and play?

#1 Post by WalkmanX » Tue Apr 04, 2006 9:48 am

Thinking about getting the Intel 2915ABG wireless card to replace the 2100AB card in my T40.

Would this be an easy upgrade? they're both mini PCI cards so this should be a simple plug and play operation, right?

Thanks

Unless you have a specific need to connect to a 802.11a AP, not sure what you would hope to gain by this upgrade. Seems that all public wifi hotspots are quickly moving towards G standard.

802.11a is practically dead as far as adoption goes. Not many adopted at all, and most of those were cricically in need of speed that 802.11b couldn't provide, and have since moved to 802.11g.

That said, as the previous poster said, unless you need 802.11a (which is unlikely), it's not necessary.

If you have 2915ABG... there's no need to swap. The extra support doesn't seem to come at any real cost.

I have the 2100 card in my T40 now. It is a/b only. I'm thinking about getting the 2915 card which is a/b/g from computers4sure.com Can I do this?

I think you guys are misinterpreting my question.

I have replaced the 2100 with a 2200 in my T40 without any problem. have to install a different driver of course.

I thought I read that the 2915ABG only worked in the T42 and T43.

T40 and T41 needed the Atheros ABG...

I could very well be wrong with that though....

WalkmanX:
tabook says that 2100 is a 802.11b only, not 802.11ab. But anyways, as previously said, if you don't need specifically 802.11a you can just go with a 802.11bg (intel 2200 or something), which should be cheaper than a 802.11abg.

So you are saying that any mini-PCI WiFi card won't work (plug'n play) on Thinkpads except the IBM branded ones?

yes, exactly. They have a modified IBM Bios and it is required to run the card on an IBM machine without a BIOS hack applied, which makes the wireless light cease to function and access connections will not be able to control the card.
