Issues after hardware upgrades and clean installing XP

#1 Post by atekant » Tue Apr 04, 2006 2:00 pm

I recently did an overhaul on my T40p (2373). I did the following:
- Up the memory to 2GB (2x1GB) from 1GB (2x512). Used Crucial
- Replace the original 5K40 with a 7K100
- Install XP fresh (didn't use recovery, no more Hidden Partition)
- Run SI and update everything suggested
- Set all power settings back to how they were before the update

All is fine generally, but there are some issues that are bothering me. I would appreciate any advice:

- Battery life is now down to 3hr something from 5 hours (9 cell) using the machine exactly how I was using it before. The 7K100 is supposed to be using less power than the 5K40, and the extra gig of memory can't be responsible for *that* much drain can it? Everything else is the same, but I don't seem to have a power savings option in the GPU anymore. Maybe that's it?

- Now and then I am having weird freezes when accessing files with Explorer. Is there a known issue with the 7K100 that I missed? I am using the stock firmware.

- The original bluetooth stack and utilities were not installed by the SI, and any attempts to install it manually from a copy on my old HD is failing because the installer thinks this is not an IBM machine. I had this problem before as well. I think the BT software is the only one that looks at something other than the BIOS to ID the machine.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

for the ATI GPU power management, go to omegadrivers.net and download the latest realse. they fully support powerplay and this is likely the reason you are seeing such low battery life.

I installed the omegadrivers. If I squint hard enough, maybe I can see some battery life improvement, but it is still not up at the 5hr range like before.

I wonder if laws of physics can't be fooled how hard you try in a spec sheet (referring to the 7K100 requiring less power than 5K40 claim given the fact that it takes more energy to spin a piece of metal faster)

atekant,

You could try isolating one change at a time:
- undoing the memory change only
- put the memory back to 2GB, and change the HD back
to 5K40 (granted the software would be change too)
