need help with ordering T42 wireless card

#1 Post by Phantom Gremlin » Fri Apr 07, 2006 3:11 am

Hi all. Looks like Lenovo put various models of T42 back into the businesscenter/visa website. One of them is 2379RHU, which I think I'm finally going to buy before they discontinue them. :)

I have a question about the wireless options, but I don't think it's specific to this particular model. I'd rather ask here than calling Lenovo, because I trust people at this forum much more than random reps on the other end of a phone liine.

I see the following as part of configuration:

Integrated WiFi wireless LAN
Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG (Standard)

Wireless LAN accessories
11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter II [$34.00]

My question is two parts:

1) is the 11a/b/g the IBM/Atheros version of wireless?

2) is the 11a/b/g an additional card I must self-install, or does it replace the "integrated" Intel 2915ABG?

The reason I think I want Atheros is that people seem to report the least number of problems with those.

I know I'm crazy for wanting an "old reliable" T42 (which I'm very familiar with) rather than the T60.

Thanks for any advice.

Yes, the A/B/G is the IBM card, and it is integrated. it replaces the Intel card.

To be fair, I have has the least problems with Intel cards, i actually prefer them to anything else on the market. I just ordered a couple of 2915ABG cards off ebay to replace the 2100B's in my T40 and T23

and yes, you are crazy for wanting a T42 over a T60 :P

Its your call, but there are steadily increasing numbers of reports of "problems" with Atheros cards as the population of users increases.

Wireless connectivity is no where near as "plug and play" as a wired Ethernet connection!

Cheers,

Bill

In my experience Ethernet isn't exactly plug and play either. Strange things can happen with different chipsets, and quality of wiring.
