Modem failure?
Modem failure?
hi i have a problem with my modem for some reason and ive tryed every by the book thing and my modem just wont work, it wont initialize it wont dial it wont do a single thing, but the driver has been reported as ok and working any ideas?
Thinkpad X31
go to hyperterm and select the modem. type:
at
followed by return, and see if you get OK. This will test the driver.
If that doesn't work, select one of the com ports - most likely COM 1 is a pysical com port, and COM 3 is the modem. Try it again.
If you don't see another com port (except com1) then the modem may be disabled in the BIOS, or the IRQ being used by something else OR its just plain broken!
Some software based modems have a virtual UART - not sure what IBM uses, but if they use a software modem then not having the driver installed properly can also cause the COM port to be missing.
* software modem in the sense that it has a virtual UART emulated with the driver. The driver takes in serial commands and converts them to proprietry commands for the modem chip. Of course there is still a hardware modulator/demodulator! A hardware modem has a built in UART and shows up like a COM port, the driver is just a redirector and wrapper which adds some windows functions, and identifies the com port as a modem to windows.
