thinkpad T41 wifi very SLOW and dropping connection

I just got my T41 this afternoon and after getting all the wireless settings done, I am connected and everything works somewhat fine.

The problem I am having is that the WIFI is very SLOW at times.. and I am right across the room from the router. I mean, Im no more than 6 feet and the router is in plain sight of my laptop, not behind any walls or anything.

Another problem is that every once and a while it will just drop the connection, and the bubble thing in windows XP will pop up telling me "one or more wireless connections are avaliable" and I will have to re-connect to my network.

I am using the Centrino intel PRO 2100 3B miniPCI that came with the laptop.

does anyone know what my problem is?

The first thing to do with any wifi stuff is to run and get the latest drivers for everything, including, especially, the latest software for your router/access point, too. I've always had better results after doing that. Done it yet?

well, I did a little experiement. I turned off the "allow IEEE 802.x authentication" or whatever that is called and I havent had any problems since.

could that have been the reason?

Of course the first thought that comes to my twisted little mind is that you'll have a hell of a job downloading new firmware if your wireless connection keeps dropping out...
