FAN WORKING ALL THE TIME
FAN WORKING ALL THE TIME
The fan in my T42 is working all the time. I thought that by creating a new power scheme setting and choosing adaptive CPU the fan would stop. It is very low in intensity but it is still on. It never stops. Is it normal? Is there any way to stop it?
Thank you for your input.

I don't think the fan ever stops.
Here is one small utility to monitor your CPU speed:

The fan is always running on my T42. It never stops regardless of the power settings I choose. Is there any way to stop it?
Thank you.

No, AFAIK you can't stop the fan, it runs constantly although it will run faster or slower depending on CPU usage.jordi32 wrote:The fan is always running on my T42. It never stops regardless of the power settings I choose. Is there any way to stop it?

Well, I've only been using my T42 for a few days, but this is what I've learned thus far.
First, you can't stop the fan from running often, but you can minimize the time it runs by doing a few things:
a) If you're using a wireless connection, set it to power save mode and select "medium" or "high." Just left click on the connection icon in the lower right corner and you'll see the options for power save mode.
b) I guess you've already done this, but set your CPU speed to adaptive. I've tried the low setting and that doesn't seem to offer any advantage--in terms of the duration of the fan running--over the adaptive setting. I have not tried the "very low" setting.
c) Word-processing and spreadsheet work seem to require the least CPU usage, according the meter in the windows task manager. If that's all you're doing, shut off your wireless connection and any other unnecessary programs.
d) I'm not certain this makes a difference, but I've set my hard drive protection down to low. It seems to have reduced the frequency with which the fan comes on and the duration, but I've yet to isolate that function to determine whether a reduced setting actually helps.
e) Whenever I use the cd/dvd drive, the fan always comes on no matter what, so avoid playing a cd while you're typing (if anyone still plays cd's, that is).
f) Other options that may help are to dim your screen and to set your hard disk to turn off in a short period of time.
BTW, my system is a t42 w/ the annoying short fan.

From what I tell from my 2373KXU, my fan runs most the time. 90% of the time it runs very slow, so slow I can hardly detect it is running but feel the heat comming out the vent on the left side of the unit.
When I process alot of images and convert file types of other CPU intensive routines, the fan can and does increase in speed as required.
One thing I am impressed with is the lack of heat on the bottom of the case. I can use this TP on my lap without it ever getting too hot.

I think all your problems are related to not setting your power scheme correctly. Read my post on your other topic about setting the adaptive setting and your problem will go away.
Like others have said, the fan is usually always on but barely noticeable. Mine turns on after about 5 min of usage from a cold start and just stays on. It gets louder if I do something CPU intensive.
FYI, you should also try to condense your problems into one post in the future.

That is actually incorrect. The thermal sensors on every Intel processor since the Pentium 4 will cause the processor to automatically throttle back in clockspeed in order to avoid overheating.

The video is fairly entertaining - the P4 lowers its clockspeed enough that it won't cook itself, even without so much as a heatsink. You can see the Quake 3 timedemo it is running slow down accordingly.

Hello,
The culprit is the GPU not the CPU, maybe the GPU thermal sensor,
in France a people sent her IBM to repair (fan noise.the stupid fan always) and they say that GPU Thermal sensor is more under but they don't say more under of what ? more under the normal ? maybe.

to see the culprit in video go to page 9.

Adaptive setting
Mdarnton,
Thank you for your help. I took a look at the CPU test you asked me. The CPU's usage percentage is usually quite low.
Daniel, my CPU is indeed set to Adaptive on AC power. I double checked by following your steps. Fan is on all the time even though most of the time is quite low.
Does anyone's T42 screen look a little shadowy on the bottom right corner?
Has anyone had problems charging the battery with the computer on? My Thinkpad would not charge while on. I turned off the computer, reinstalled the battery, turned on and then it started charging. Weird, huh?
Thank you for your help.
Regards,
Jordi
