T42p (2373-KTU) issues
T42p (2373-KTU) issues
All:
I just last week received a T42P from our pal Bill. There are two manufacturing issues I thought I'd compare notes on before beginning the arduous process of dealing with the issues.
1.) In the back of the unit, on the long edge, there's a serious "bow" between the screen and the battery area. That is, when the unit is closed, there's at least 1 to 2 mm of play, and squeezing the two parts together moves the screen by the 1 to 2 mm. This seems wrong to me.
2.) When typing, the left-hand rest area (above the PC card slots) "creaks" and moves a little every time I put my wrist down. I have a T40P which does not exhibit this behavior, but both machines appear to have the same design. It seems like some piece is loose, but I can't figure out what it could be.
In addition, the keyboard that came with the unit really, really bites. As described in other messages here, I had the "bad" one made in China. I've called IBM several times and they tell me the "good" one is out of stock, and I have to keep calling until it's in stock -- otherwise, their computer will just send me out the one that's in stock. Luckily, my old T40P had the "good" keyboard, so I swapped them out while waiting to get a new one.
In any case, please let me know your experiences with these issues, if you have a T42p KTU. Thanks.

My KTU has all the same problems but hey what a great machine though.
1. The back will bow, its the way its made. There is no real support back there because of the battery.
2. Stick a pc card in there. It went away for me when I did that.
3. Keyboard, well what is wrong with it? Its not as nice as my T23 but it has to be thinner to make 1in but maybe I have the good one.
If it really bothers you get the $300 protection plan and smash it, then send it back for a new one.
