Blue screen on T43 after going to XP SP2

#1 Post by TP_user » Thu Apr 13, 2006 3:06 pm

I submitted this once. For some reason I cannot find what I submitted. So my apology if this is a duplicate.

I am running XP pro SP1 on my T43. I want to upgrade to latest windows movie maker which required SP2. So I installed the upgrade. The SP2 upgrade completed successful and asked me to restart. But I got a blue screen of death on the restart. The error was
0x0000008E (0xc0000005 0x80614A10 0xA8B27B68 0x00000000)
The error happend after I enter my password to logon to windows.

I can restart in safe mode with network.
I tried "enable boot logging". It failed with the BSOD. When I restart again in safe mode, I cannot find the bootlog anywhere.

So I have no idea what caused the error.

I scanned the device manager, there is no error. This may be because drivers are not loaded in safe mode.

I searched google and found some entries saying that the problem may be related to security software such as Zonelab which I have installed. But windows does not allow me to uninstall ZOnelab when I am in safe mode.

Any suggestion ?

GO to zonelabs webiste and try a search there, worst case scenario it will tell you how to edit the registry to "remove" zonelabs!

I think one of the requiements BEFORE upgrading to SP2 was to remove/disable any firewall apps....

Make sure to backup the registry and any files that you might need before moving forward!

Good luck.....

Found the problem. It is Zonelab conflicting with Windows firewall. I used the uninstaller that is in the Zonelab folder instead of using Windows add/remover software in control panel. That uninstaller allow me to uninstall Zonelab and now my SP2 restart with no problem.
