HELP! unstable T40 with dothan 2.1Ghz upgrade.
just so that you know, ac5 is the best thermal compound in the business, every degress helps.
also it is not suppose to show its best performance, you need to give it a week to set in

I still get BSOD; and I have played with the voltages and fancontrol to reduce the heat as much as possible without compromising stability
anyhow here are some numbers:
FULL LOAD with prim95 1024 torture test
800Mhz .860 40c
1.6Ghz 1.020v 49c
1.8Ghz 1.164v 57c
2.1Ghz 1.340v 74c
At 2.1Ghz I can't reduce voltages much; I have not optimized my settings but did not wan to go too agressive (for now)
Now I am convinced my BSOD are not a CPU heat problem..
most of the errors seem to be memory problmes, page_faults
etc.. what is the concensus?
1) bad XP install (driver etc)
2) Memory problem (yet still same FSB ??)
3) Bad HD... (HD Tune reports all is well)
4) Bad system board (yet all is well with Banias 1.7 1mb)
any takers?

Those temps are just about what a 2.1 should run a full load.coconutie wrote:I still get BSOD; and I have played with the voltages and fancontrol to reduce the heat as much as possible without compromising stabilityanyhow here are some numbers:

I would go to www.memtest.org, download and burn the iso to a CD.
Boot from that and let the memory test run for AT LEAST 6 hours. I would recommend you test ONE DIMM at a time, then the two together. This will not be a quick and dirty test, but it is the ABSOLUTE best way to find out if the memory is good/bad.

Hi,
You could for sure have a defective CPU or memory, or even what could be just overheating is the chipset... Do you by chance get BSODs when running the NEW Dothan CPU at 2.0 or 1.9 GHz ? (you can do this by locking the max multiplier with NHC or similar).

So, what are the results of the memtest?

Everything passes fine! I booted with the floppy solution; in my docking station.... ran all night! no problemo....
The tests were not finished; but the tests showed up with no errors! I do however noticed something in my event viewer and seems to be a problem with the BIOS!!!
I get bombarded with this error; check it out!!
Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem? may be the source?!

Explanation
The embedded controller (EC) hardware returned data when none was requested. The data is being ignored.
This could be caused by the basic input output system (BIOS) incorrectly trying to access the EC without synchronizing with the operating system.
User Action
Contact the computer vendor for an updated BIOS and install it according to the vendor's instructions.

Well, since you have updated the BIOS and EC, and the memory checks out, I would backup your data, format the hard drive, and re-install windows. Next likely candidate is a corrupted OS and that is what you will have to do to test that hypothesis.
Best of luck.

I started to perform a fresh install of XP but in another directory...
therefore not formating my HD for the install and preserving my old install in case it has nothing to do with XP at all...
well the sad news is; after installation I did not have time to apply the chipset, wireless, graphic drivers when a BSOD happended...
is it possible it's a bad CPU?? I even placed PC2700 RAM and removed all memory (except for the new stick) just to prove it was not the ram and performed the memtest as suggested by brent
or is the CPU just plain too fast for the rest of the system to cope?
now this is not overclocked in anyway or form! same fsb...
Also my problems seem mainly at boot-up or shutdown but will happen but less often once I'm (finally) up and running
I guess the only thing to do is accept my defeat; and reinstall my banias 1.7 1m and see if I regain stability...
Hummm.... Anybody interested in purchasing a 2.1Ghz intel CPU?
good price!

Ask the person who sold you the cpu to replace it with another one. Or another option is install another sl7v3 from a computer that you know it's working ok.
Your next two options i think are the ones i mention.
Good luck.

I will attempt to replace my CPU it was branded as brand new..
but when I received it... it was not in a sealed anti-static bag. It is OEM so it's very hard to tell if they are rejects from the assembly line or something The CPU is coming directly from MALAYSIA
The seller has a good reputation on this board; I don't think she will have any problems exchanging the CPU.
I will keep you all updated...

Reject CPUs never leave the factory. It is possible it has some antistatic damage to the cache, but that is EXTREMELY RARE (1 in 10,000 or less) b/c AS damage usually kills the whole chip.coconutie wrote:I will attempt to replace my CPU it was branded as brand new..

Another possibility is you have a flakey system board. You will know when you try to run another SL7V3 and it gives you the same problems. If the other chip runs smooth, then you know where the problem lies.

Brent; I will agree with you, it sure would be nice to test with another CPU but, I do not have another CPU to test with except with a 1.5 or 1.7 banias 1meg cache chip.... which I will have to downgrade too if I can't get stability...
Now if I regain stability with the 1.7 would that not prove that the systemboard is fine?!! Note: it was rock solid before the upgrade...
with the 1.7 chip.

It's caused by the WinIO driver used by Thinkpad fan control. I had to hack the XP acpiec.sys in order to stop it. That said, it's not really an error.
X61
Cmarti; Yes... it's her!
I contacted Ithinker from malaysia and true enough she has no problem replacing the CPU (I just have to re-ship the chip to her at my cost and she will send a new CPU back I assume no charge.
so we are sharing the cost for shipping..... I guess that's fair...
SUGO: considering; any possiblities of obtaining a copy of your
acpiec.sys?
I had reverted to rightmark cpu clock utility but with fancontrol it gives the same error... I find using the fancontrol handy combined with either of the two speed setting tools, unfortunetly clashes somehow.
