Hard Drive Active Protection System Feezes

#1 Post by synapse » Fri Jul 30, 2004 11:33 am

Hi-

I just installed the latest BIOS and Embedded Controller and now whenever I click on the Real Time Status tab of the APS it freezes on me. I cannot click to a different tab, or close, or move the program. APS seems to be working fine and shows it detecting bumps and everything, and it will even open and work great until I click on the Real-Time Status tab, then everything freezes. Does anyone have any ideas on what I might be able to do or try to fix this? I would really appreciate it as this is really annoying as I must restart my computer everytime after clicking the tab. Thanks in advance!

-Dan

i've got the same problem. What i do is just run task manager and close the rundll32 app, then restart it using the run command in the start menu. However, if anyone has a more permanent fix than this, i'd appreciate the input.

I can click on the Real-Time Status tab with no problems.

Is this with the new Embedded Controller (v3.03) that came out Jul 30?

I have Active Protection v1.22, BIOS v3.06f and Embedded Controller v3.03.

It is with APS Software v1.22, Driver v1.20 Dec 17 2003 and BIOS 3.06f and EC 3.02.

I'll try the new EC. Hopefully that'll do it. Thanks for the replies!

No luck :( updated the EC to 3.03 and it still freezes when I try to view real-time status. I might just have to restore windows. I think I wanted to remove the hidden partition so that might be an oppertunity if I can't fix this problem. Any more ideas? Thanks!

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Active Protection?

I don't know what exactly the APS depends on, or what would cause it to malfunction.
Just some FYI: I have the 60Gig hdd, I've disabled the hidden partition in BIOS, and I've repartioned the drive (I did not bother reinstalling XP) - for whatever that is worth.

I'm using the latest BIOS/EC, and the latest APS, on a retail WinXP installation and no service partition. Mine locks up when I click on the Real-time Status tab. I can click the other two tabs until I click on status, then it freezes. Thanks for bringing this to my obsessive/compulsive attention... lol ;)

Just one more mystery to solve...

If your screen is blanking, try downloading the latest video drivers. That fixed mine.

I do have the latest Video drivers and my screen doesn't blink. I am really puzzled since I did get it to work though at the beginning perfectly fine. It was actually kinda cool to see it move. But all of a sudden (well, I guess I must have done something) it doesn't work. I really am stuck at what to do.

what tends to happen with mine is that every runs smoothly until i try to close the window. At that point, outer frame of the app disappears, but the little window showing the thinkpad's position remains, and continues to show the real time orientation of the laptop.

no clue what to do. like i said, i resort to ctrl+alt+del and closing rundll32 and rerunning it.

synapse, I know you said you have the latest video drivers. But, in this thread the latest video drivers seemed to fix the problem for everyone:

Do you use hibernate/standby?

I would try reinstalling the video drivers anyway.

Well, I did reinstall the video drivers again and still no luck. It is going to be a pain reinstalling everything but I wouldn't mind if only I knew what caused this in the first place so I don't have the problem again.

This will not help, but thought it might somehow be useful. As I was reading these posts I noticed I had sw ver. 1.20b installed, so just to see what would happen I d/led ver. 1.22 and did the install. Also have current BIOS and EC. Everything works as it should, no hangups. 2373KXU

Just another success story...

I re-installed the latest ATI drivers from IBM and the latest 1.22 APS applet. Works fine. I also did NOT update the ATI drivers with an update that is listed on the Microsoft Windows Update site. Not sure what it fixes, but I figure there's just as much chance it will break something. :) Anyhow, APS works great... latest BIOS/EC, latest ATI from IBM, latest APS 1.22 from IBM. Problem solved.
