My T43 is the greatest laptop

Hey. People always say no one talks about their laptop until there is something wrong. But I am writing to say that my T43 is the greatest. It is my first and it won't be my last.
I have had it since August and here at college it lives up to its name. My 14in SXGA ThinkPad is the best laptop for me. It is light, professional and clean feeling. My friends are scared by the way I handle it (in comparison to other laptops)
. Often times I close it very quickly pick it up and slide it in my schoolbag (with my laptop pouch- Timberland) and I am on my way. They don't know about the easy FN+4 standby, and FN+12 Hibernate functions. And I don't slam it down; I know that I can close it with confidence.
I know the hinges won't break. When people want to look at my screen I often pick up the laptop and turn it around to them. They are so surprised because most people want you to get up and look at their screen. Mind you I always lift and turn with two hands.
I am constantly in the library moving to different floors and I can't count the number of times I've had to open and close this thing and take it in and out of my schoolbag. I have put folder and notebooks on top of it because I know it can handle it.
It works all the time. Updates have been seamless and everything just works. The keyboard is great.
How to sum this up you don't really know how good your ThinkPad is until you look at the way others have to be baby theirs. The quality is amazing on this thing. From the touch to the operation. For all those who have stories of near falls and accidents. It has only fallen from my shin to the floor so I don’t really call that a fall but a slide. And while I know it is high quality I NEVER test it out. I don’t take advantage of it. (Man-made things CAN always break got to take care of it still)I think the abuse I give it as a mobile college student, carrying it around in a Timberland schoolbag with a pouch is enough "abuse." Now that I think about it, my friends have accidentally dropped my schoolbag while my laptop has been in there. Still the bag falls on the book side a not the laptop side. I am writing this in between classes and in short of amount of time so excuse the length and randomness.. But moral of the story T43 is great everything you hear is true. ThinkPad’s are great. Life is easier with a Thinkpad.

Nice post. I have been using ThinkPads since 1992 or thereabouts (Windows 3.1). I know how you feel, and that is why I keep buying them. ... JD Hurst

I've only had my T40 for a bit less than 3 weeks and it feels a hell of a lot more solid than my old workhorse Dell, whose slothful slowness convinced me that I needed to find something better. And when doing my research, I rediscovered ThinkPads and fell in love with the T40!

I can actually now take my laptop to uni and not have to pull out something that looks shabby and ancient in comparison to other laptops, and I know that it'll do exactly what I need it to.

In short, best monetary investment I think I've made so far in my life

I couldn't agree more with all of you here!
Ever since I've bought it, I've found myself convincing all my buddies/colleagues planning to buy laptop to go for TP. It's true that it is a tad expensive compared to other equally equipped laptops, but you don't understand *why* until you own one and compare it with other laptops!!!

Quality comes at a price!
I'm glad that my colleagues envy me

for owning a TP!!!

And the second best thing is this TP-forum, you can get almost any problem solved!!!

Exactly right! I remember I joined the Dell support forum when I bought my Latitude CPi, and I got lost in the mountain of forum areas and lack of areas for specific models in their range. But I love it here - already I've been able to get a copy of recovery CDs for my machine, and find out about utilities like NHC that have made a difference. Must be the advantage of being independent of Lenovo

THis post made me both happy and sad. It made me happy that you're as excited about your first TP as i was about mine. Sad because my first TP was a T23 and I can't help thinking "they just don't build 'em like that anymore". Reading your post makes me sad because it shows that I'm an old fart and happy that you helped me realize before I start having these thoughts too often.

As you've all indicated these TPs are great machines, well built and designed, this is my first TP a T41 and just love it. No problems for this year and a half old piece of joy.... I've seen the monster notebooks out their and can't believe they're called notebooks they are at least twice the weight of a TP and don't have centrinos as a result they run hot as hell.... I know these TPs cost a bit more but it's worth it....

maybe this is your first thinkpad,
with comparison with other T4x thinkpad, your T43 does has the most heat dissipation problem on its SouthBridge!!!

The T43 may also be less sturdy than most other Thinkpads. At least that's the case for my T43.

I actually had a thread going on this same basis about my love of my T41P. It is by far the best laptop I have ever owned.

Yes, Thinkpads rock. They are quite simply, the best made laptops on the planet.

(unless you go for one of those bulky mil-spec things).

Sturdy built;
The very blackness ;

These all make a great laptop. However, the noises from hard drive and fan make it a nightmare to use it on a daily basis.

My HP is certainly less sturdy but it has more power for the same price, and it has a bright wide screen. The only thing I dislike is: rigid keyboard.

Next time I will still consider Thinkpad but I am soon getting a second HP next month.

I can't say how true your love of thinkpad sentiment rings with me. Plenty of power and screen for me. I don't even use my desktop anymore. Me luuuuvs me thinkpad. Ugh!

I just upgraded my ram from 1GB to 2GB. Now I love my thinkpad even more. In linux it doesn't even touch the swap file.

I totally agree. However, I have to make some remarks...
-My USB 2.0 is not working (only at 1.1), see my other topic
-My secondary ultrabay drive keeps spinning down after 5-10 seconds (which is really annoying since my program files dir is on it
-no firewire (so no DV cams conectivity)
-no media ports (CF, SD, xD, MS, etc...) (no digicam exchange)
-crappy GFX card (crappy OpenGL and lousy DirectX performance, no Vista Aero)
-only 2 USB at one side of te laptop (should be at least 4) (bothers when having 2 USB disks, memorysticks and other peripheral stuff)
-no eSATA port (no raptor on full speed)
-no wireless USB (All these cables around...)
-no 802.11n (crappy wireless performance & range)
-no built-in webcam (always handy)
-no built-in GPS (Always good to know where I am)
-no third HDD support (more & faster storage is always in demand)
-no dual core support
-only 3GB memory support when using insanely expensive 2GB module
-no fingerprint scanner
-no 2G/3G/4G wireless networks support

Though I love the physics of this thingie here. Twice fall down on the ground from about 3-4 feet, just worked. Keyboard, screen, plastics and other materials are great.
Mouse knot and touchpad are just awesome along with the extra buttons.
Bluetooth resolves the GPS and works great with my Intellimouse Explorer for Bluetooth (mouse + keyboard). PCMCIA slots work good for enabling NAND media to be read, such as CF and SD.

Lenovo still has a lot of work to do, the ultimate laptop is not finished yet. Crank in al those features and I am sure I am willing to donate two month salaries into Lenovo Fundings & Co in exchange for that ultimate laptop.

A laptop as you describe would not fit in the 14" formfactor. I would have to be widescreen. Forget about thin and light.

It looks like you are after more of a desktop replacement machine.

There's something I can add:

I'm proud of my laptop because it do everything I want it for. Nor more, not less. Some friends tell me bad things about my thinkpad because it look bored (like me), because it don't hace those characteristic like their Dells and HP (firewire, card reader, and so on) but I don't take care because the best of my thinkpad is it have the characteristic that I really use (IR, bluetooth, fingerprinter, parallel port -yes! I'm one using it!), it's lighweight, reliable, the better keyboard and everything ones work very very well.

It's an amazing machine and I get surprised because people look for widescreens or shinny colors or a lot of connectors they will not use...

My thinkpad made my live easier. Never before coding was so funny!

I quite agree with you.

My T41P fits my needs perfectly. It's small and light, offers a good video chip, excellent display and is aesthetically pleasing to me. I know other people on campus and at work with their shiny Dell's and HP's all look up when I pull out the Thinkpad. They know that a truly superior machine has entered the room and made itself known . Cloaked in it's all black Darth Vader badness this is one laptop that really 'brings it'.

Oh and Vista Ultimate has been running like a champ (minus an annoying wireless speed issue) for the last few weeks. It's finally done with it's indexing and is all settled in. Gotten comfortable with it's living arrangements. It runs nice and smooth. I have not encountered any problems related to performance or heat. This machine just keeps on working; you know: like it was designed to.

To quote an Apple Exec (hi Phil!) when talking about the G5:

"This is one kick-[censored] machine"

I love this laptop!

Sure it can be built-in without being a Desktop replacement. Since I do not need PCMCIA but I want ExpressCard, this saves a lot of space.

-no eSATA port (no raptor on full speed) See firewire
-no wireless USB (All these cables around...) Can be integrated in the BT chip
-no 802.11n (crappy wireless performance & range) Integrate in the miniPCI slot
-no built-in webcam (always handy) Problematic, since the display design is thrown up. I saw some neat Asus implementations though
-no built-in GPS (Always good to know where I am) Just a chip and an antenna
-no third HDD support (more & faster storage is always in demand)Biggest problem, which cannot be overcome
-no dual core support T60, nuff said
-only 3GB memory support when using insanely expensive 2GB module T61, nuff said
-no fingerprint scanner Already built-in in t43 and up

Except for the hard drive and the webcam, this all should be possible easily. PCMCIA is fading out, which saves aneough space to crank in all these extra chips, antenna's and connectors.[/url]

As good as the engineers are, I highly doubt they could cram all than into a T4x chassis and keep heat within nominal levels. I wouldn't mind them proving me wrong. However looking at the size of the FireGl T2 chip, the norhtbridge, the CPU, the RAM sockets, the HD, the miniPCI card area and spaces dedicated to an optical drive, there really doesn't seem to be much wiggle room.
