My T43 Processor

#1 Post by gunston » Wed May 03, 2006 9:30 pm

hi,
i hope this question might not annoy you guys out there.
is it possible to take out my current processor 1.86Ghz from my T43 and replace with another slower processor like 1.5Ghz?

why? you could always just underclock your current CPU if you're trying to get extra battery life.

He could be trying to upgrade another TP and downgrading this one to sell...

Hehe... pity, I've been looking for a 400MHz Dothan > 1.5GHz to upgrade my T40...

Just make sure that with your processors, the bus speed is the same (400MHz vs. 533MHz)

although i have undervolt my processor.
it seems like always get hot, and the annoying fan is keep turning on running at high speed, no matter of using CHC or FanUtility.
.
Came out an idea of changing its processor to a lower speed might help.
well, just a crazy idea.

not really dependant on the processor... the T43's fan just sucks like that.

ya, the fan is turniong on all the time at high speed.
One thing i have to admin is that, thinkpad is made and designed for its thinness, therefore it has sacrifice the proper air ventilation inside.
No matter what BIOS or EC version that will be going to release then, yet the air ventilation still bad inside the machine unless you are using your thinkpad in a very cold temperature.

There's this one for sale in the Marketplace:

Not sure whether there'd be that much of an appreciable difference - if there was and I wasn't saving up to get one of brentpresley's hard drives, I'd be seriously considering this one :)

Except that I'm in Australia :(

The big difference will be going from non-Dothan to Dothan though... so it's the cache size as well, not just the GHz increase...

On topic:

How old is the T43? You could try running some temperature diagnostics on it and seeing whether it runs very hot all the time, or just during processor-intensive situations. (Maybe you're *always* running processor intensive programs??)

I am too! :) Which part? I'm in Sydney - and to give you a tip, the hard drives that brentpresley sells, including additional shipping down here of $5US, are about a quarter off the price you'd find at a typical computer store. I'm probably going to send him a PM tonight or tomorrow - even though it is used, I'm confident it'd be just as solid as a new drive, and much cheaper. I'll ask how much extra for shipping to Australia.

Gunston

If you have a 1.86Ghz processor you already have a slower one !! and it was installed for you free :-)!

In a 1.86 processor you can have active any multiplier ranging from 6x up to 14x, which multiplied by the base frequency (133) will give you the speed.

So you only have to set the 'max' multi to be less than 14 to have it running more slowly. You can, for instance use RMCLOCK or NHC to set max. multi to 12x so that your processor runs at 1.6Ghz MAX.... If using NHC, experiment with the 'custom dynamic switching' settings...

Shipping "down under" would be an additional $5 over my current listed price (for any of the drives). :-)

I'll probably have a PM ready for you tomorrow...leaning towards an 80 rather than one of the 60's. :)

what about those guys who are using thinpad series lower than T43.
one more thing, is that the X40 series, is a low voltage laptop.
are they facing the same heat problem too?

No probs with sound nor heat with my 1.5 Banias...NHC has it at 34C. But I'm not doing anything at all intensive right now - just Firefox with a single window.
