Blue-screen on hibernate or standby

#1 Post by raabjerg » Thu May 04, 2006 2:58 pm

Hello.

I've just gotten used to the T41p I bought a couple of months ago, and generally very happy with the computer :-)

However, there is one annoyance that won't go away:

About 1/3 of the times I try to put the computer in hibernation mode (or sometimes on standby), I will get a BSOD saying "bad_pool_caller" (and the usual technical stuff which I can't decode).

When I try running the crash dump through the windows debugger, it tells me that the probable cause of the problem is the file wg5n.sys, which belongs to Sygate Firewall (newest version).

But I've been able to run this firewall on all other IBM-laptops I've tried, without problems. And I don't see how hibernating the computer should cause the firewall to crash.

Have tested my memory (2x512MB) with memtest86, and found no errors.

Does anyone here have experience with similar bluescreens, or others suggestions for finding a solution?

Best regards,
raabjerg

Hmmm, well...

Have you tried removing it for, say, a week and running the Thinkpad as you normally would? Specifically, under the conditions which would cause the BSOD, namely resume from hibernate or suspend.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

You can make sure that all computer activity is stopped before going into Standby or Hibernate, and that might make a difference.

Probably a more practical solution would be to uninstall Sygate Firewall, then download and install a free firewall such as Kerio or ZoneAlarm. If your problems go away, you know the problem was with Sygate. If your problems remain, then likely some other software is causing the problem. See if Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer gives any clues.

Event viewer doesn't reveal much...

Will try installing a different firewall, though I would rather not :)

Did you ever resolve this?

I've been getting the same problems for the past 3 weeks and am trying to determine the source of the problem.

I don't have Sygate Firewall, although I try uninstalling Windows Defender (which didn't make any difference).

Anyone had this problem and successfully fixed it??

Thanks!

The problem turned out to be Sygate itself. I found out the product was discontinued (in the free version anyways), and after uninstalling, my woes were gone.

The problem appears to have gone away.

The thing that seems to have worked was removing the UltraBay HDD, rebooting empty, reinserting the UltraBay HDD, and rebooting.

Perhaps the UltraBay connector wasn't making a good contact and was messing up the writes to the onboard HDD during Hibernate/Standby??

I'll post again with an update.

Hope this helps,
