Flickering LCD problem
I have a strange problem that I haven't been able to dig up much information online about, but, is irritating the hell out of me.
In my default install, the LCD is fine, also when booting up etc.
But in my new linux install (with fglrx ati drivers installed), or if I try to update my windows drivers on my t42p, the screen will flicker, almost as if it was a CRT @ 60 hz. Its hard to look at it for more than a few minutes at a time without getting a headache.
I find it odd that both linux and windows ati drivers cause this problem, but its here.
Also both are reporting a refresh rate of '50hz'. I know that refresh rates 'aren't supposed to matter with LCD's" but I'm wondering if this might be a cause. I can't seem to override it in either operating system.
This is driving me nuts, anyone else had a similar experience (and hopefully a fix)?

Flickers only when i'm in an environment with newer ATI drivers loaded. Bios POST screen and windows xp with factory default drivers or linux with the new FGLRX drivers. VESA drivers in linux will not make it flicker (though, of course, give up any sort of acceleration).
It's not a hardware problem as far as I can see, just a very irritating software problem i can't track down the cause of.

Actually, I do believe it could be a hardware problem. The accelerator part of your ATI graphics adapter may not be functioning correctly. Try running PC-Doctor for Windows, and see what it reports. You can also run PC-Doctor for DOS by downloading the program from IBM and burning a bootable CD. This may actually give a more trusted result.
You can also go into Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot, and turn off hardware acceleration to see what happens.

Alright, I'll give that a try as soon as i can. I just find it odd that the factory default ATI drivers installed by IBM have no flickering problem at all (and provide full acceleration, unreal tournament 2004 runs very well)

Update -- I found out the drivers on the IBM website are a fair bit newer than the ones in the 'software installer' program
The new IBM ones installed no problem wtf
And also, the ATI official driver installer for the firegl series (I was using the regular drivers before, for the regular consumer cards, and also the omega custom drivers) told me that it couldn't find any compatible hardware?!
I'm confused as hell
