Heat on Txx
Heat on Txx
can anyone compare the heat given off between a t42 (dothan) t43 (sonoma) and t60 (napa)? I know the t42 is cooler than a t43 because I've used both. But compared to the t60?
thanks
thanks

First, your terminology is all off:xzjn9p wrote:can anyone compare the heat given off between a t42 (dothan) t43 (sonoma) and t60 (napa)? I know the t42 is cooler than a t43 because I've used both. But compared to the t60?

Dothan = CPU (90nm, 2MB L2 Cache Pentium M, found in BOTH the T42/43 - and some users have even upgraded their T40s w/ Dothan chips)
Sonoma/Napa = Chipsets
You need to make sure you are comparing comparable systems with similar/same video cards. The T4x series uses one heatsink+fan for the CPU and the video card (the chipset is NOT actively cooled).
I can tell you from personal experience that my T42 with a 2.1GHz Dothan and ATI Radeon 9600 gets substantially hotter than my T40 with the SAME 2.1GHz chip and a Radeon 7500. The only difference is the Video chip on the motherboard in my case.

LOL. Banias = CPU (not chipset). It is the predacessor of the Dothan CPU.xzjn9p wrote:ok point taken.
modified question: using the BANIAS chipset in the t42 and all T series computers have INTEGRATED intel graphics. Compare and contrast the heat.
And integrated graphics = graphics on the chipset (not a separate chip). The 42 does not have integrated graphics in that regards. If I remember correctly, only the T43 had the option to use the integrated chipset graphics (Intel GMA 900).
Anyway, the T42 is widely regarded HERE as the best thinkpad of the T4x series. The T43 has some GREAT upgrades, but there are some annoying issues (LOUD fan comes to mind).
The temperature differences between them will be less than 5C, unless you go for the P version of any of them that has the best video.

Well, take a look at the temps some people have posted in the T60 forum and compare them to some of the temps on a T43 or T42. It still depends, however, on what you will be doing...My T43 runs in the range of 37-40 degrees whilst on battery and generally 43-45 degrees when plugged in and doing a medium-heavy load. It then can go higher to 52-60 degrees and peg there for a CPU intensive task such as BOIC or Prime95.
I don't know if people have posted their temps for the T60, but I know there are some, for the T42 and T43, here and in the TP Utility Forum.

When I had my t43 and my girlfriend's t60 sitting next to each other for a couple days, the t60 was noticeably cooler at all times. I didn't have any temp reading program on the t60, so I can't tell you the numbers, but there was a pretty big difference, especially when it got warm in the room (no a/c). I was very jealous.

[sidebar] It'd take more than that (hot air, or lack of it) to make me envious of a T60. Don't like the keyboard, don't like the shape (less beveled edges, which IBM did for ease of carrying), etc., etc.
If it got to a boasting match, I'd just say, Yeah, but mine's an IBM ThinkPad, and leave it at that.

p.s. I'm glad to have a Chipset Nazi, not to mention a FRU Nazi, LCD Nazi, Video Chipset Nazi. *I* surely can't be bothered to remember such trivia, and appreciate someone at the back o' the pub who does. Cheers, mate!

now that's some good information. I currently have a fujitsu s7020d with a dothan processor, sonoma chipset, and Intel graphics media accelerator 900 graphics (Jmmmmm wrote: When I had my t43 and my girlfriend's t60 sitting next to each other for a couple days, the t60 was noticeably cooler at all times. Why do you guys take it personally? If I REALLY wanted to be insulting, there are much choicer things that could be said.Jmmmmm wrote:Don't you hate it when people are obnoxious like that? Simply put, if you don't know WHAT something is properly referred to, don't toss out the terms or do some quick reading. It confuses the general readership.
Especially when someone tries to go out and buy a 2MB SONOMA processor (good luck yanking that sucker off the motherboard).

One thing you can try is to undervolt the processor with Notebook Hardware Control.xzjn9p wrote:now that's some good information. I use that on my T42 w/ a 2.1GHz Dothan and it cuts the idle temp by a good 5C and the load temp by almost 10C. Does wonders for battery life as well.
Just remember to test each undervolt setting with Prime95 or some other CPU stresser to ensure stability.

Heh, as always you have to take into account the ambient temperatures.
In my house the ambient temp during the summer time is usually around 80F. Which makes my thinkpad run pretty consistently at around 47-49C.
Plus, there's very little circulation in this room to the thinkpad usually STAYS at that temperature. However, when I'm at school I usually get temps of around 35-45C with an ambient temp of about 70F. Sorry for mixing units....
Cheers.

Yeah, I'm not going to say there is a 20 degree difference or that the t60 didn't get warm as well, but it certainly was cooler than my t43, even though the t43 is undervolted and her t60 is not.xzjn9p wrote:now that's some good information. That's nice and smashingly good...After all, the FAQ here is just something the Admins and Mods do as a hobby, not meant to be read or taken seriously now is it? been using NHC (CHC) since day-1 and it doesn't make any difference. I keep my processor at .7v at all times. Its just a flawed design, one I don't plan to continue to own.
NHC makes big different on my tp, i am talking about more than 10C different in here.

Something like this?
http://exactchoice.cnet.com/ProductProfile.aspx?id=3909
What is the cooling/vent setup like? That might be part of the problem.

I don't know the particulars of the internal design, but it is a design flaw. Basically they didn't change the design when they went to the sonoma platform and the increased heat from that chipset/fsb etc.. makes it run hot.
