battery life t40 and t42

#1 Post by boon » Sat May 06, 2006 6:17 pm

I read both t40's and t42's battery life and they are both the same...but since the banias takes more voltage than dothan, this would mean if upgrading a t40 from banias to dothan, will gives more battery life....kind of a silly conclusion but would this be true?

Without really answering your question, I can say that there is more to battery life than the CPU. You have to consider the chipset, the GPU, the LCD, the HDD, and perhaps other hardware. Also to be considered is how Speedstep and Powerplay come into the picture. Finally power consumed (watts) is the product of volts and amperes. So voltage use alone does not give an accurate measure of battery life expectancy.

I own a T42s (2373-K5H) with 40 GB 5400 RPM hard drive.

My wife works with a T40 with same size hard drive.

When I compared it last year (Dec'2004):
-My T42s was brand new, but battery conditioned
-My wife's T40 was about 1 year old, also battery conditioned.

I can attest that my wife's T40 seemed to have noticably better life than my T42, at least half hour to 1 hour more, judging from the way battery meters were running down.

Maybe it's because of lower power CPU, maybe lower graphics subsystem power draw, etc. I don't have the exact model of hard drive she had; can check for you if you're very serious...

Also the T40's fan was off most of the time--it seem to run much cooler than my T42.

thanks but thats fine,

what i was wondering was the t40's cpu is a banias(1mb l2 cache) and the t42'sdothan (2mb cache). the banias uses more power consumption...

battery life Dothan vs. Banis

#5 Post by levimax » Mon May 08, 2006 5:46 pm

Banis uses less power than Dothan during light use and Dothan is more effecient during high CPU loads. I upgraded my T41 from 1.6 Banis to 2.0 Dothan and didn't notice any diffrence in battery life. The one exception is during "standby". The Dothan uses much more power during "standby" than "Banis" so much so that I now use "hibernate" rather than "standy" when I travel.

Intel mobile CPU descriptions

Can anyone explain how the terms 'BANIS' & 'DOTHAN'
translate into the marketing descriptions, i.e. Pentium M 7xx?
What Thinkpad models come with each and does it matter?
