1 yr and 9 days Long Post

Well my T40 bit the dust yesterday. It's driving me crazy thinking of what it could be. At first it just started screwing up in Quake 3 the screen would go darker then a bunch of jibberish colors and lines would appear. So I called IBM they had me uninstall the drivers and then uninstall Quake.
It was also screwing up on some of the 3d screensavers in XP plus pack.
I even went so far as to reformat the HD. Then it got worse reformatting went fine, put plus back on there and the 3d is still messed up. rebooted and now all i get is a screen full of multicolored garbage. It boots along fine you can hear XP start (windows star up sound) but all that's on the screen is colorful garbage, it looks like one of those puzzle pictures that you stare and stare at until the 3 d picture pops out at you. Except nothing ever pops on this one. Anyway IBM is sending me a box. Im guessing it's the graphics card.

I am betting the graphics card it gone too.

I have a friend who does alot of gaming and his machine get quite hot after playing for an hours or so.

IBM will take care of it. Nice to own an IBM!

Well after receiving the box today I see that it is suppose to go to solectron in memphis.
After hearing of the horror stories about them on here I decided to take it to the local service center that swithced my LCD.
They already checked it out and it is indeed the video card so they are ordering a new mainboard from IBM and should get it tomorrow and put it in also so I will probably get it back sometime tomorrow.

Well just got a call from the service center and the mainboard is backordered. So they won't be even getting the part until sometime next week.

Well this is going from bad to worse.
I decided to call IBM and see if they had an ETA on the part. They tell me that it is in stock and that there is actually 3 different systemboards that can be used. They gave me all the FRU#'s and said to call the service center to see which they are trying to order. So I call this place back and ask them what the FRU is they are trying to order. And OMG all hell broke loose on their end of the phone, he lambasted me for calling IBM and it was none of my business to be dealing with them and it was none of my business as to what FRU they are trying to order and if i was that concerned about the part numbers i should've sent the machine to IBM.
They are not in the business to supply customers with that type of information blah blah blah. Anyway I told him get my machine put back together and I will pick it up. Well they half assed put it back together the lcd cover doesnt fit, the screw covers are thrashed the top is scratched up and has water spots all over it. So needless to say I have filed a formal complaint against them with IBM's Partner World Dept. They have called me twice already today regarding the complaint and they are woking on it.
So my machine is now at solectron lets see what they can do to make this go even worse.

If someone said it was none of my business about ANYTHING over the phone .. and talked to me they way you described them talking to you, I would personally take a trip down there (since you said it was a local place) and tell them who's business it WAS and WASN'T.

Don't take [censored] from people like that. It's their job to keep you happy.

Well I did go down there to pick up my machine and the guy I talked to on the phone had miraculously left already they sent some teenager out with my machine.
But it aint over like I said I have filed a formal complaint with IBM's
partner world dept. and they were very interested and concerned. I have the IBM's guy's direct line so I will get some sort of satifaction out of this before it's done.

Well got my machine back today from solectron.
They replaced the system board which in my case fixed the problem.
They also replaced my cover and lcd bezel, that the other place screwd up. they did however not get the kwyboard seated corectly so I reaseated it but when I had the keyboard off I noticed that they did not put the thermal pad back on the graphics gpu so the long fan part that extends over the GPU is just sitting there with no thermal pad underneath it is this imprtant they don't seem to think so.

My T40 bit the dust in March. Solectron replaced the motherboard and it worked fine, but they messed up the upper bezel around the keyboard and I had to send it back.

It was kind of a PITA but I haven't had a problem since.
