My computer freezing/sticking

#1 Post by wantathinkpad » Wed May 10, 2006 1:33 am

My T43 suddenly started freezing on me. So i updated my virus scan. Shut it down ran the virus scan in safe mode and it found four things. Restarted computer still sticks/freezes.. Downloaded spybot and destroy that foudn two things. Still sticks. It even stuck for a few seconds while I was in safe mode writing this. The weird thing about this is that usually viruses or whatever use 100% cpu usage. THis one stuck at 29%. I swear it is a software problem but I have not downloaded anthing. If anyone can tell me that this is a common problem with T43's then that would be great because then I can get it fixed underwarranty. However, I don't see why I can't get rid of whatever this is.

Try disabling your wireless adapter (right-click on it to temporarily disable it). See if the problem remains. Some users were reporting high CPU usage by the wireless adapter when the signal was weak.

Sounds like spyware/virus - also try Adaware and CWSShredder.

It is not the wireless adapters. Was not connected. and I was in safe mode. Adware right now was not working, the updates (the problem has yet to be fixed maybe a server problem will try again). However, I am positive it is a software problem now.

Virsus scan still finds nothing. I even tried logging off then shutting down. Logs off fine but the screen, "Windows is shutting down" stays up forever. This is so, even when shutting down in safe mode. Thsi really trips me out. Out of all the little virusses or bugs I've had since my three years on campus with three different computers is that safe mode is just that. Safe. Run a virus scan and update in safe mode and your good to go. But this one.....

The only thing that occured differently in the past week was that I borrowed my friend''s digital camera and uploaded pictures into my computer via USB. Two days after I did this i got the warning. "Power Surge on USB Port". I wrote a thread on that no reply. I googled it and so many peopel had the same warning. They all had the same advice. Ignore it. I still think the problem is a bug. But why no detection?

USb?

#5 Post by wantathinkpad » Wed May 10, 2006 10:53 pm

Okay so update. after doing a virus scan again and spybot. I turned on my computer. I am actually writing you this now. It stuck for about three seconds so I know it is still messed up. However, what is interesting now that it says USB not recognized. This is a step up from Power surge on HUb port. And it does not recognize my printer anymore. Could the camera really have messed up my usb and then led to my printer not being recognized. (note-- I did not have my printer hooked up the two days I had the digital camera updating the pics). ...?

Have I found my problem. Is it a usb driver that is causing this. Is there a such things as a usb driver.?

Update again: Now that I have to use campus computers I bought my first USB flash drive. Since my comptuer still starts I hooked up the usb flash drive to try to rescue files in case suddenly it won't start. However the when i plug it in it says foudn new hardware and but then it says problem with installing . Go to my computer drive is not recognized. So at least usb port is officially not working> I can get that fixed but what does that have do with computer sticking/freezing and screen being stuck at "Windows is shutting down"?

Install and run Tune Up Utilities.

destroy all registries.

Go to download.com and search for CCleaner.

destroy all registries.

Download Ace Utilities. destroy all registries.

Use Hijackthis.

search for each of the proccesses and registries on Google. anything that is said to be dangerous must be destroyed (especially careful with this one)

Don't you have system restore?

I have this ("power surge on usb port") problem, too. I've had it for a couple of months now. What I remember doing is cleaning out my entire keyboard piece by piece bc I spilled OJ on it, and therefore having to take the keyboard out to do that. I'm not sure how soon after that, but I never received the error before that (even when the keys were sticky from OJ but I didn't have time to clean it out).

Another possibility is dropping it and denting the extended battery (although I thought it was after the messages started). I still get the popup notice using the regular battery that I still have, so it might be something on the mobo (and not caused by the battery).

I'm pretty sure it's hardware, bc when I boot using a Live Linux CD of some sort, it'll report usb power issues while starting. Under the Battery Information tab in IBM's Power Manager, supposedly it's running at 12.3 or 12.4 volts (regardless of running on AC or either battery, the case-damaged external or the perfectly fine regular battery) instead of the 10.8 it's supposed to(?).

I read someone's post somewhere who had a 15" screen that they found a small short circuit that they figured they introduced when disassembling/assembling, but I have a 14", and wasn't able to find anything visibly obvious.

I just noticed (hadn't checked in a long time) that someone mentioned USB "circuit breakers" of some sort. If that's the case, I guess I'll have to send it in for under-warranty repairs.
