EZ-GIG HDD Problem on new 100gb HD

#1 Post by tallassazn » Thu May 11, 2006 9:05 am

I recently purchased a new 100gb HD and Ultrabay Slim for my T42. Ran the EZ Gig supplied software.

The software did the image mapping of my original T42 40gb HD but also mapped the exact size of the original HD so now on my 100GB HD I have a 40gb partition and 60gb of unallocated space.

How can I get it so that I have an image map of my original HD but on one single 100gb partition?

Was this issue caused because I formatted the new HD to NTFS before running the utility in DOS after a reboot?

Thanks

It is probably a limitation of the EZ-GIG software. To do what you want, you will probably need to make the clone with Ghost or Acronis True Image. You could also use partitioning software like Partition Magic to expand the partition size after cloning.

I just bought a 2nd HDD adapter with the EZ-GIG software. I also bought a HDD, the same brand and size as the original. This way, I was pretty sure I could clone either direction without any problems.

Use the trial version of acronis it is 100% functional.

Let us know the results

I have been using EZ-Gig for many years, there is a function when you copy that will ask you if you want to use the full size of you "new" drive or use the same size partition on the new drive.

The default is the same size partition on the new drive. It is prompt based (unless you use the GUI version, which I do not like). Make sure you are using the correct prompts. Also you can check their web-site and see their manual on how to use EZ-Gig.

That's good to know. :D

I didn't have a copy of EZ-Gig at my present location to review. I'll have to check out their website. I was surprised that absolutely no documentation for how to use the software was included with the 2nd HD Ultrabay Slim adapter.

Or -- if the 40 GB partition is sufficient for the operating system and programs -- use DISKMGMT.MSC to create a new partition, and use that for your files, or even move your profiles over to it. (I find that my U:\ drive for all user profiles gets most of the fragmentation due to data churn, leaving my C:\ system partition relatively unfragmented and devilishly speedy.) ;)

I posted instructions on how to do this once upon a time, and could easily again.

Sure. This comes without warranty, if you hose your Registry without making a full backup (How to: do a File | Export of the whole thing), you're on your own.

Run CLEANMGR.EXE, to clear out temp and IE cache and such.

On the new partition (I use U:\), create a folder called TEMP. Under the environment variables (SYSDM.CPL, Advanced tab), set the System variables (NOT user variables) for TEMP and TMP to this new folder. Hit okay a few times.

Copy your entire c:\documents and settings\ folder to U:\. It'll take a while. When it's done, right-click the Start Button, and click Open. If you don't have the address toolbar on in Explorer, turn it on. You're probably looking at c:\documents and settings\[user]\start menu\, right? Close it. Right-click Start button again and select "Open all users." Probably c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\, right? Good.

Open REGEDIT. Make a full backup somewhere safe (file | export). Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList. Export again, but this time just this "branch." Note the ProfilesDirectory key? Says c:\documents and settings\ don't it? Change it to u:\documents and settings\.

Reboot. Login. Perform those right-click-open/open all users on the Start Button again ... should be looking at the folders on U:\ now. As an added test, go into the Users control panel, and create a new user ("nemo," for example). Logout and login as Nemo. His My documents, Start Menu, etc., ought to be under u:\documents and settings\nemo\ .

For XP I may've had to do something for the Bluetooth Exchange folder and Shared Documents/Music/Videos ... the latter jumps to the All Users documents and settings ... that might need hand editing elsewhere in the Registry.

This process works better if you do it BEFORE adding users other than Administrator, and before installing apps. If some app like Access IBM (only an example) creates folders like c:\documents and settings\[user]\application data\program\profiles\blah blah blah\cache\blah blah blah\ ... and enters it in the Registry hard coded, you'd have to hand-change them in the Registry. But most programs should play nice and use the variable %homepath% for all user settings paths.

If problems arise, it's easy enough to reset ProfilesDirectory key back to C:\ . As long as you didn't delete those folders. ;)
