Upgrading IBM T41p

#1 Post by djpharoah » Fri May 12, 2006 1:26 am

Hi everyone. Glad to be back. Havent visited this forums for about 4 months.

Anyways I might be getting an IBM T41p off ebay (dont know of any other places) for about $1k.

The only issues I have is that the laptop comes with 802.11b mini wirless card. I would like to upgrade that to 802.11b/g from Intel for superior linux drivers. Any ideas where I would get the wireless card from and how easy is the installation?

Another issue I have is laptop only comes with cd-rw/dvd but I owuld like to add dvd-rw drive. How much are these drives?

Hi, you can get the card also from ebay. I got mine there, perfect sale and works wonderful.

Regarding the DVD-RW, the general consensus here is that there are too few 9.5" drives around, and too expensive, so it's probably a best bet to get an external USB 12.5" height unit, which is quite easy to find for around 120$ (new) or less if bought through ebay...

There are plenty of Intel 2200BG and 2915ABG mini-PCI cards on eBay, but I strongly suggest that you make sure you get one which is the specific IBM EOM version. I have bought IBM versions of these cards from dragon_on_the edge on eBay and found him to be a reliable supplier

Installation is straight forward, there is a movie on the IBM web site that covers the basic process.

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks bill.

I read the link you posted and it seems that to avoid flashing a cmos or whatever I should get the IBM Wireless Card right?
