Moving laptop freezes it?

#1 Post by Bgradid » Thu May 18, 2006 2:52 am

Ok, so, I recently upgraded to 2gB of ram, and have been having a lot of freezes. However, I did extensive prime 95 tests (at various speeds of the processor for hours on end) and got no errors.

However, I realized the laptop primarily froze when I moved it.

My first reaction was to disable the active protection system (which does display the sensor data correctly). This did not fix the problem however.

Infact, I've been able to recreate the freezes at the bios by plaving the laptop on a tabletop.

I've also taken the ram out and double checked that it was installed firmly, which it is.

Does anyone know why on earth this might be happening? It's quite humiliating to see my thinkpad freeze this much :(

Also, if I was to contact IBM for warranty support, should I sneak my 512 sodimm back in there? Or do they mind that i installed third party ram?

Uh oh, sounds like a system board problem. Which usually occurs because a connection on the edge of trouble is jostle when the Thinkpad is moved, especially if moved with one pressure point on a point of the Thinkpad.

So far from my experimentation with this problem, that seems very likely the case.

I guess I'll get to try out the warranty system now, heh. (I'd be glad to go in there and try to fix it myself, but, i'm guessing that'd void the warranty :( ). I hope it isn't too bad in canada

And today... the problem seems to have dissapeared. Go figure.

Hey, at least it got better over the course of a day; it might actually be a loose connection somewhere inside the Thinkpad that could be tightened easily. :)

I might take the palm rest and keyboard off later and take a look.
I think i've also been suffering from overheating issues (its been warm lately) when using my cpu AND gpu to their maximum. (I get a sudden power off then). I was seeing temperatures as high as 97* C when I got the chance to monitor it

My t42p has been oddly angry at me ever since I installed more ram (but prime95 testing shows the ram itself isnt causing any errors).

I had that problem on my T41. It was the system board. I am very friendly with the service vendor and was there when they replaced it. They said cold solder joints were the main problem. The machine is still under warranty. ... JD Hurst
